يصعد الراوي شجرة العائلة النجدية تلبية لطلب زوجته، وشجرة العائلة النجدية للذكور فقط، لكن النساء حاضرات بالفعل لا بالاسم، ثم تتحول شجرة العائلة إلى آلة سفر في الزمان والمكان، تتابع الرواية أربعة أجيال من أحد فروع العائلة النجدية، يلمع من بينهم رجلان (الجد وابنه البوشامي) وثلاث نساء (الجدة زوجة البوشامي وابنتها نشمية وحفيدتها سلمى) أما البقية فهم شخصيات باهتة أو سلبية. للرواية محوران: عام وخاص، والعام متعلق بنشاط أشخاص الرواية في السياسة والتجارة والمجتمع أما الخاص فيصف علاقاتهم العائلية، والمحوران مترابطان. تتقاطع سيرتا التاجر والبوشامي مع شخصيات سياسية رئيسية، منهم عبد العزيز بن سعود ومبارك الصباح وشيخ قطر وآل الرشيد والملك فيصل الأول وجمال باشا السفاح وجرترود بل، وبعد هزيمة مبارك وآل سعود في معركة كبرى مع آل الرشيد يحقد عبد العزيز على التاجر، وينجح في اسره ويسجنه طمعاً بفدية كبيرة من ابنه البوشامي الساكن في الشام، والبوشامي مليونير كما تصفه صديقته صانعة الملوك جرترود بل، يزوره جمال باشا السفاح ويستجيب لطلبه فيطلق سراح محكوم بالإعدام، ولا يغضب عليه عندما يكتشف بأن ابن البوشامي أطلق اسم جمال باشا على خروفه، وبعد تنصيب فيصل الأول ملكاً على سوريا تفلس حكومته فيلجأ للبوشامي لإقراضه، ثم يأتي الاحتلال الفرنسي ليبدأ فصل مأساوي من حياتهم. بعد موت البوشامي يخذل القريبون والبعيدون عائلته، وترفض أرملته الزواج من أقارب زوجها المتوفي لأنه كما تصفه كان الرأس والبقية ذيول، ثم يأتي دور ابنتها نشمية، وهي على النقيض من إخوتها وزوجها وبقية المعلقين على الشجرة نجمة اجتماعية وشجاعة وكريمة، تنقذ شقيق لها من بؤس عاهة خلفها مرض شلل الأطفال وشقيق آخر من الزواج بجاسوسة أمريكية، وتعلم زوجها التجارة، ولأن مكان النساء في أعرافهم خلف القافلة لا قبل الرجال يسخطون عليها، والجدة ونشمية وسلمى مثل الماترويشكا الروسية، ترفع الأولى فتخرج لك الثانية، وعندما تظهر الثالثة سلمى ينتقم الرجال منها ومن كل النساء الخارجات على أعرافهم القبلية والرافضات لتسلطهم الذكوري المطلق على النساء، وتتفكك عرى القرابة بين أفراد العائلة.
