About the Author: He is a journalist, scientist and poet. He was born in Sidon, Lebanon, and studied pharmacy at the “Syrian Protestant College” (later the American University of Beirut) and then immigrated to Egypt and settled there. He worked in the press and edited in Al-Ahram newspaper and others. He traveled to New York in 1907 and co-authored the university edition with Farah Antoine. He returned to Cairo and participated with his wife, Rose Antoine Haddad, in publishing the Ladies and Gents magazine, which has been publishing for twelve years. Editor-in-chief of Al-Muqtafa (1949-1950), and he is the author of a large number of books, most notably “Sociology” and “The Geometry of the Universe According to the Law of Relativity”. He has a large collection of novels and plays between the author and the translator. He promoted his ideas through the two publications, Al-Muqtafa and Al-Hilal, which were established respectively in 1876 and 1892. Nicolas Haddad has been described as “one of the pioneers of the Arab Renaissance”.

تدور أحداث الرواية في آسيا الوسطى على شاطئ البحر الأسود، حيث في «بنطس» مملكة مستقلَّة من النساء المحاربات، يزرْنَ أسبوعًا في العام مملكة «جاريجاريا» المجاورة، يتخلَّصْنَ بعده من مواليدهن الذكور، ويُبقينَ على الإناث فقط؛ ليضمنَّ استمرار وجودهن الأنثوي الخالص. في روايته يصوِّر لنا «نقولا الحدَّاد» — على ضوء تلك الأسطورة القديمة — كيف تسلَّطت نبوءات الكاهنات على أفئدة نساء المملكة، وحاربن — بتعبيدهنَّ لإلهيْ القوة والحرب — أيَّ ميل يبدُر منهن لإطاعة «كيوبد» إله الحب الذي كان سينسف ما دأبن عليه من تطهير مملكتهنَّ من الرجال. في نظام صارم كهذا يعاقَب المتسلِّلون بالقتل، لصالح أيٍّ من الآلهة ستحسم المعركة عندما تتخذ الملكة رأس الدولة ذاتها من «أفريدوس» عشيقًا تدسُّه بين وصيفاتها متنكرًا في صورة «أفروديت» إلهة الجمال؟
