About the Author: Dr. Muhammad Kamel Hussein (1901 – 1977), born in a village in Menoufia Governorate, was raised by his older brother after the death of his father while he was still young. He was the first in the baccalaureate (currently high school), and also remained the first in his squad at the Faculty of Medicine in Qasr Al-Aini, where he graduated at the age of only twenty-two years, after which he was sent on a study mission to Britain, where he obtained a fellowship degree at the Royal College of Surgeons. He was the first Egyptian to obtain a master’s degree in orthopedic surgery from the University of Liverpool. He is rightfully considered the pioneer of orthopedic medicine in Egypt, as he established the Department of Orthopedics and contributed to the establishment of the Red Crescent Hospital in Cairo. In 1950, Dr. Taha Hussein chose him as the first director of Ibrahim University (currently Ain Shams), but the administrative complexities and political maneuvers prompted him to resign from it after two years. He was a member of the Arabic Language Academy and the Egyptian Scientific Academy, which he headed more than once.

عرف العرب في الجاهلية طريقتين للعلاج هما الكهانة والعرافة ثم ما خبروه من عقاقير نباتية بالإضافة إلى الكي والحجامة والفصد. وكان من أبرز أطباء تلك الحقبة زهير الحميري وزينب طبيبة بني أود والحارث ابن كلدةعلا شأن الطب العربي إبان الدولة العباسية. فقد برع الأطباء العرب في مجالات طبية عديدة كالطب الجراحي الذي أطلقوا عليه اسم عمل اليد وعلاج الحديد. ومن إسهاماتهم في مجال الجراحة أنهم كانوا أول من تمكن من استخراج حصى المثانة لدى النساء عن طريق المهبل. كما أن الزهراوي (ت427 هـ، 1035م) كان أول من نجح في إجراء عملية فتح القصبة الهوائية يعود الفضل إلى العرب في اكتشاف المرقّد (المخدِّر) العام، وهناك من القرائن ما يدل على أنهم كانوا أول من استعمل التخدير عن طريق الاستنشاق باستخدام الإسفنج المخدر، كما طوروا طب العيون الذي عرف لديهم باسم الكحالة، وقد برعوا في قدح الماء الأزرق من العين وكذلك أجروا عمليات أخرى لقدح الماء الأبيض (الساد). وتناول الأطباء العرب والمسلمون أمراض النساء والولادة، وضمّن ابن سينا الجزء الثالث من القانون الحادي والعشرين في كتابه القانون في الطب كلامًا مفصلاً عن أمراض النساء والولادة. ويسجل لابن الهيثم سبقه في إشارته إلى استخدام الموسيقى والإيحاء في العلاج النفسي. كما كان للعرب الفضل في فصل الصيدلة عن الطب كعلم قائم بذاته أما في مجال التشريح، فنجد أن ابن النفيس تمكن من اكتشاف الدورة الدموية الصغرى التي تجري في الرئة، وبذا مهد الطريق لوليم هارفي ليكتشف الدورة الدموية الكبرى، كما انتقد عبداللطيف البغدادي (619هـ، 1222م)، بعد أن فحص أكثر من 2,000 جمجمة، وصف جالينوس للهيكل العظمي. واكتشف الطبري أبو الحسن (ت366هـ، 976م) لقاحًا ضد داء الجرب، وكان الرازي (ت311هـ، 923م) أول من وصف الجدري والحصبة بوضوح، ويعد كتابه الحاوي سجلاً دقيقًا لملاحظاته السريرية على مرضاه. وقد حافظ الأطباء العرب والمسلمون على روح علمية صادقة تؤازرها التجربة والملاحظة فلم يعزوا الأمراض إلى تأثيرات خارجة عن النطاق الطبيعي كما فعل أطباء الحضارات التي سبقتهم الذين رأوا الأمراض عقابًا لآثام بني البشر. وقد شاعت كتابات ابن سينا والرازي وغيرهما في أوروبا خلال ما سمي بالقرون الوسطى في أوروبا وأثرت أعمالهم في التعليم الطبي فيها لأكثر من 600 سنة وحول هذا المواضيع وغيرها يدور هذا الكتاب.

منذ أن وجد الإنسان على ظهر البسيطة، وهو عرضة للسقم؛ لذلك كان سعي الفكر البشري حثيثًا وراء العلاج، وقد قدمت الحضارات القديمة (الصينية، والغربية، والإسلامية، والهندية) العديد من الاجتهادات الطبية والتركيبات الدوائية ليتداوى بها الناس من كل داء، إلَّا أن الدور الذي تميزت به الحضارة الإسلامية عن غيرها من الحضارات الأخرى هو فعالية الأداء الطبي كأداء مؤسسي، حيث تحول النشاط الطبي إلى نشاط مؤسسي عريق يقوم على تقديم الرعاية الصحية، ومساعدة المرضى وعلاجهم، وتقديم الطعام لهم ومتابعتهم، وتقديم الكسوة والغذاء لهم. كذلك كانت للبيمارستانات أهمية تعليمية كبيرة إلى جانب أهميتها المهنية، فكانت مكانًا لتعلم فنون الطب إلى جانب ممارسته.
