لقد نالت الجراثيم من البشر ما نالت ردحا طويلاً من الزمن دون إن تكون له معرفة بها أو سلاحا لردعها , حيث اعتاد على مكافحة الأمراض والمحافظة على اعتدال صحته باستخدام الأعشاب والنباتات الطبية . ولم يتعرف الانسان الى الجراثيم الا في النصف الاخير من القرن التاسع عشر حيث بدأ بول ايرلخ يستخدم الاصباغ والمعادن العضوية organometallics في العلاج تحت فكرة ان الجراثيم تصطبغ بالصبغات فربما تكون لهذه الصبغات سمية انتقائية عليها , فأستخدام صبغة المثلين الزرقاء والتريبان الحمراء لقتل بعض الجراثيم , غير ان فترة المداواة الحديثة قد بدأت بعصر دوماك وفيلمنك , حيث استقطاع دوماك عام 1935 من استخدام صبغة البرونتوسيل في العلاج التجريبي والسريري ثم اكتشف ان صبغة البرونتوسيل هي صبغة سلفنميديه Sulphonamide وان الفعل القاتل للجراثيم لمركب السلفنمايد في تركيبها ، بعدها دخل السفابايردين كأول فرد من السلفنميدات الى الاستخدام عام 1938 اما فيلمنك فيعتبر أول من اشار الى ا ن أحد اطباقه المزروع بجراثيم المكورات العنقودية الذهبيه قد تلوث بفطر البنسليم نوتيتم , حيث ادى الفطر الى منع نمو البكتريا في المنطقة القريبة منه , بعد ذلك تم عزل مادة البنسلين واستخدم سريريا عام 1941 وكانت له نتائج سحرية ادت الى انتاجه تجاريا فيما بعد . بعدها استطاع واكسمان Waksman وجماعته عزل الستربتومايسين عام 1944 , ثم جاء اكتشاف التتراسايكلينات والكلورمفنيكول والارثرومايسين , حيث حصل كل من دوماك وفليلمنك وجاين فلوري وواكسمان على جائزة نوبل على هذه الاكتشافات . يناقش الكتاب المضادات الحيويه من حيث فعاليتها المضاده للجراثيم والخصائص الفيزياويه والكيمياويه والية فعلها وحركياتها الدوائيه ودواعي استخدامها واعراضضها الجانبيه .
