About the Author: (1306 AH / November 15, 1889 – 1393 AH / October 28, 1973 AD), an Egyptian writer and critic, was called the Dean of Arabic Literature. He changed the Arabic novel, the creator of the biography in his book “The Days”, which was published in 1929. He is considered one of the most prominent figures in the modern Arab literary movement. The ideas and positions of Taha Hussein still raise controversy until today. He studied at Al-Azhar, then joined the Ahlia University when it opened in 1908, obtained a doctorate in 1914, then was sent to France to complete the study. He returned to Egypt to work as a professor of history and then as a professor of the Arabic language. He worked as Dean of the Faculty of Arts, then Director of Alexandria University, then Minister of Education. Among his most famous books are: On Pre-Islamic Poetry (1926) and The Future of Culture in Egypt (1938).

He studied elementary, middle and high school, and graduated from them in 1371 and 1952. He received forensic sciences at the hands of some scholars in the mosques of his town. Then he joined the University of Damascus to study geography, then graduated from it in 1956-1957. After that, he joined the mandatory military service, and graduated as a lieutenant, then was assigned to the front as an artillery officer on the border with Palestine in the northern sector in 1960 AD. Then he returned to teaching. He was passionate about studying the science of history with its arts, and he promoted Islamic history and became prominent in it, and classified it in an innovative way, and he was distinguished for accurately formulating his history in its past and present from the Islamic point of view with the presentation and analysis of events, and he responded in his writings to some of the suspicions raised by orientalists and their followers. He was interested in studying genealogy, and excelled in it. He moved to Saudi Arabia in 1972 and worked as a professor of geography and Islamic history at the College of Social Sciences in Riyadh and Qassim. He had prepared a radio program on Quran Radio from Saudi Arabia called The Geography of the Islamic World. He has more than two hundred works on history, Islamic thought and geography. He also participated in the development of curricula and study plans in the sciences of history and geography. He passed away on the first day of Safar, Sunday, 1436 AH / corresponding to November 23, 2014 AD

لم يكن شاكر معروفا بين الناس قبل تأليفه كتابه «المتنبي» الذي أثار ضجة كبيرة بمنهجه المبتكر وأسلوبه الجديد في البحث، وهو يعد علامة فارق في الدرس الأدبي نقلته من الثرثرة المسترخية إلى البحث الجاد. والعجيب أن شاكر الذي ألف هذا الكتاب سنة 1936 ولم يتجاوز السادسة والعشرين من عمره لم يكن يقصد تأليف كتاب عن المتنبي، إنما كان مكلفا من قبل فؤاد صروف رئيس تحرير مجلة المقتطف بأن يكتب دراسة عن المتنبي مسهبة بعض الإسهاب ما بين عشرين إلى ثلاثين صفحة، ولكن هذا التكليف تحول على يد شاكر كتابا مستقلا عن المتنبي أنجزه في فترة زمنية قصيرة على نحو غير مسبوق ونشرته مجلة المقتطف في عددها الصادر في السادس من شوال 1354 هـ الأول من يناير 1936م، وصدر فؤاد صروف مجلته بقوله: هذا العدد من المقتطف يختلف عن كل عدد صادر منذ سنتين إلى يومنا هذا، فهو في موضوع واحد ولكاتب واحد . اهتدى شاكر في كتابه إلى أشياء كثيرة لم يكتبها أحد من قبله استنتجها من خلال تذوقه لشعر المتنبي، فقال بعلوية المتنبي وأنه ليس ولد أحد السقائين بالكوفة كما قيل، بل كان علويا نشأ بالكوفة وتعلم مع الأشراف في مكاتب العلم، وقال بأن المتنبي كان يحب خولة أخت سيف الدين الحمداني واستشهد على ذلك من شعر المتنبي نفسه، واستُقبل الكتاب بترحاب شديد وكتب عنه الرافعي مقالة رائعة أثنى عليه وعلى مؤلفه .

“وقبل كُلَّ شيءٍ, فأنا لم أبْلُغْ يومًا ما من السَّذاجة والغفلة وطيب التفس, مبلغًا يحملني على أن أعتقد, مغرورًا بما أعتقد, أنَّ فتًى أعجميًا, غريب الوجه واليد والّلسان عن العربية, يدخُل في العشرين أو الخامسة والعشرين من عمره, قسم ( اللغات الشرقية ) في جامعةٍ من جامعات الأعاجم, فيبتدئُ تَعَلُّمَ ألفٌ, باءٌ, تاءٌ, ثاءٌ, أو أبجد هَوَّز, في العربية, ويتلقَّى العربية نّحْوَها وصرفها وبلاغتها وشعرها وسائر آدابها وتواريخها, عن أعجميٍّ مثله!, وبلسانٍ غير عربيٍّ, ثمَّ يستمع إلى مُحاضرٍ في آداب العرب أو أشعارها أو تاريخها أو دينها أو سياستها بلسانٍ غير عربيٍّ, ويقضي في ذلك سنواتٍ قلائل, ثم يتخرَّجُ لنا مُسْتشرقاً ( في اللسان العربي والتاريخ العربي والدين العربي ), ندين له نحن العربَ بالطاعةِ = ولم أبلغ من السذاجة أن أعتقد أنَّ هذا ممكنٌ, وإنْ كُنْتُ أعلمُ علم اليقين أنَّ كثيرًا من أهلِ جِلدتنا اليوم قد دانوا بذلك, وجعلوا الأمر مُمْكنًا كل الإمكانِ!” برنامج طبقات فحول الشعراء.

About the Author: Mahmoud Shakir, who is Sheikh Abu Usama Mahmoud bin Shakir Shakir al-Harstani, is a Syrian historian and Islamic writer. He was born in Harasta, northeast of Damascus in the month of Ramadan in 1351 AH / 1932 AD, and died in Riyadh on the first Sunday of Safar al-Khair in 1436 AH corresponding to November 23, 2014. He studied elementary, middle and high school, and graduated from them in 1371 and 1952. He received forensic sciences at the hands of some scholars in the mosques of his town. Then he joined the University of Damascus to study geography, then graduated from it in 1956-1957. After that, he joined the mandatory military service, and graduated as a lieutenant, then was assigned to the front as an artillery officer on the border with Palestine in the northern sector in 1960 AD. Then he returned to teaching. He was passionate about studying the science of history with its arts, and he promoted Islamic history and became prominent in it, and classified it in an innovative way, and he was distinguished for accurately formulating his history in its past and present from the Islamic point of view with the presentation and analysis of events, and he responded in his writings to some of the suspicions raised by orientalists and their followers. He was interested in studying genealogy, and excelled in it. He moved to Saudi Arabia in 1972 and worked as a professor of geography and Islamic history at the College of Social Sciences in Riyadh and Qassim.
