Gipsy’s Acre was a truly beautiful upland site with views out to sea – and in Michael Rogers it stirred a child-like fantasy. There, amongst the dark fir trees, he planned to build a house, find a girl and live happily ever after. Yet, as he left the village, a shadow of menace hung over the land. For this was the place where accidents happened. Perhaps Michael should have heeded the locals’ warnings: ‘There’s no luck for them as meddles with Gipsy’s Acre.’ Michael Rogers is a man who is about to learn the true meaning of the old saying ‘In my end is my beginning.’ …….. The title Endless Night was taken from William Blake’s Auguries of Innocence and describes Christie’s favourite theme in the novel: a “twisted” character, who always chooses evil over good. Christie finished Endless Night in six weeks, as opposed to the three-four months that most of her other novels took. Despite being in her seventies while writing it, she told an interviewer that being Michael, the twenty-something narrator, “wasn’t difficult. After all, you hear people like him talking all the time.” The story was adapted for film in 1972, starring Hayley Mills and Britt Ekland. It was adapted for BBC Radio 4 in 2008 and a graphic novel version of the story was released later that year. Endless Night was also adapted for TV in 2013 with the added character of Miss Marple played by Julia McKenzie. The book is dedicated to Christie’s relative “Nora Prichard from whom I first heard the legend of Gipsy’s Acre.” Gipsy’s Acre was a field on the Welsh moors.

An old-fashioned London Hotel is not quite as reputable as it makes out… When Miss Marple comes up from the country for a holiday in London, she finds what she’s looking for at Bertram’s Hotel: traditional decor, impeccable service and an unmistakable atmosphere of danger behind the highly polished veneer. Yet, not even Miss Marple can foresee the violent chain of events set in motion when an eccentric guest makes his way to the airport on the wrong day… _One of Miss Marple’s few outings from St Mary Mead, this time she’s holidaying in London, when a certain eccentric guest sets off a violent chain of events. The story was adapted for TV starring Joan Hickson in 1987. An exotic holiday for Miss Marple is ruined when a retired major is killed… As Miss Marple sat basking in the Caribbean sunshine she felt mildly discontented with life. True, the warmth eased her rheumatism, but here in paradise nothing ever happened. Eventually, her interest was aroused by an old soldier’s yarn about a strange coincidence. Infuriatingly, just as he was about to show her an astonishing photograph, the Major’s attention wandered. He never did finish the story. …….. This novel introduced Jason Rafiel, who would strike up an unusual friendship with Miss Marple. The two couldn’t be more different but develop a begrudging respect for each other. So much so that Rafiel would posthumously call on Miss Marple’s skills of detection in the novel Nemesis. A Caribbean Mystery is dedicated to John Cruikshank Rose, “with happy memories of my visit to the West Indies”. Agatha Christie and her second husband Max Mallowan’s friendship with John Rose started back in 1928, at the archaeological site at Ur, the same site where they met each other. In 1983 Helen Hayes starred in the US TV movie adaptation, with Barnard Hughes as Mr Rafiel, after which Joan Hickson was Miss Marple for the UK TV production in 1989. June Whitfield reprised her role as the radio Miss Marple in 2004 in BBC Radio 4’s dramatisation of the story. The latest version featured Julia McKenzie, and was broadcast on TV in the UK in 2013.

One minute, silly Heather Badcock had been gabbling on at her movie idol, the glamorous Marina Gregg. The next, Heather suffered a massive seizure. But for whom was the deadly poison really intended? Marina’s frozen expression suggested she had witnessed something horrific. But, while others searched for material evidence, Jane Marple conducted a very different investigation – into human nature. ….. The last of Agatha Christie classic English village mysteries, St Mary Mead is no longer what it once was. The 1960s see a widowed Dolly Bantry (of The Body in the Library) forced to sell Gossington Hall, which is eventually purchased by a rich movie star who brings a deadly mix of glamour and torment into the now developing community. Observing the social changes following the Second World War, Agatha Christie and Miss Marple do what they’ve always done – solve the mystery through the habits of the people involve and the village they live in. Agatha Christie had long been fascinated by the tastes of new ‘developed’ houses on the estates around her home in Wallingford, Oxfordshire and she saw an opportunity to explore these in The Mirror Crack’d. The title came from the poem The Lady of Shalott, by Tennyson. In 1980 Hollywood adapted the novel into a film starring Angela Lansbury as Miss Marple alongside Elizabeth Taylor as the beautiful Marina Gregg. They shortened the title to The Mirror Crack’d. In 1992 The Mirror Crack’d from Side to Side was the last Miss Marple novel to be adapted by the BBC and star Joan Hickson in the title role. It wasn’t until 2009 the novel was again adapted, this time with Julia McKenzie as Miss Marple, Joanna Lumley reprising her role as Dolly Bantry and Lindsay Duncan as Marina Gregg. June Whitfield starred as Miss Marple in the August 1998 broadcast of BBC Radio 4’s dramatisation. Film director and screenwriter Rituparno Ghosh created a Bengali language version of Christie’s story, titled Subho Mahurat (2003), which reset the story in the film industry of Kolkata (Calcutta).

Unpleasant things are going on in an exclusive school for girls – things like murder… Late one night, two teachers investigate a mysterious flashing light in the sports pavilion, while the rest of the school sleeps. There, among the lacrosse sticks, they stumble upon the body of the unpopular games mistress – shot through the heart from point blank range. The school is thrown into chaos when the ‘cat’ strikes again. Unfortunately, schoolgirl Julia Upjohn knows too much. In particular, she knows that without Hercule Poirot’s help, she will be the next victim… …. A taste of political intrigue and international espionage for Poirot, all set in a girls’ school in England but the roots of the story are to be found in the Middle East. The story is a result of the same inspirations Agatha Christie found on her extensive travels, much like the novels The Man in the Brown Suit and They Came to Baghdad. Here we see them brought over to England. The story was adapted for TV in 2008, and starred David Suchet. Parts of the plot were altered, such as Poirot’s appearance early on in the story, but overall the adaptation remained fairly close to the original novel.

The owner of a seaside villa is plagued by strange feelings about its past… Soon after Gwenda moved into her new home, odd things started to happen. Despite her best efforts to modernise the house, she only succeeded in dredging up its past. Worse, she felt an irrational sense of terror every time she climbed the stairs… In fear, Gwenda turned to Miss Marple to exorcise her ghosts. Between them, they were to solve a ‘perfect’ crime committed many years before. ……… Whilst living in London during the Second World War, Agatha Christie stored away two special books in the vault of a bank for safekeeping, and these were to remain there until Agatha Christie’s death. Curtain: Poirot’s Last Case was left for her daughter Rosalind, and Sleeping Murder: Miss Marple’s Last Case was for her husband Max. In doing this, Christie ensured that after her own death, her two best known detectives would have their final say. Originally it has been thought that the story was written in the early 1940s, although this has been debated by Christie expert John Curran in his book Agatha Christie’s Secret Notebook in which he discovers that Christie began writing the novel much later. There is much discussion around when the story was first written. In An Autobiography Christie explains that she ‘had written an extra two books during the first years of the war’ and ‘those two books, when written, were put in the vaults of a bank.’ But in Agatha Christie’s Secret Notebooks, John Curran argues that it was written much later. Sleeping Murder was first adapted for television in 1987 as part of the Miss Marple series by the BBC, starring Joan Hickson as Miss Marple. It was then adapted again in 2006, this time by ITV, for their series Marple which starred Geraldine McEwan. 2001 saw the first radio adaptation which was transmitted on BBC Radio 4 and starred June Whitfield.

Curtain: Poirot’s Last Case book pdf download By Agatha Christie

Poirot and Hastings come full circle at Styles. Now wheelchair bound, there is still one case for Poirot to solve. Who is the serial killer X? …….. Arthritic and immobilized, Poirot calls on his old friend Captain Hastings to join him at Styles to be the eyes and ears that will feed observations to Poirot’s still razor sharp mind. Though aware of the criminal’s identity, Poirot will not reveal it to the frustrated Hastings, and dubs the nameless personage ‘X’. Already responsible for several murders, X, Poirot warns, is ready to strike again, and the partners must work swiftly to prevent imminent murder. Poirot’s final case, a mystery which brings him and Hastings back to Styles where they first solved a crime together. The story was both anticipated and dreaded by Agatha Christie fans worldwide, many of whom still refuse to read it, as it is known to contain Poirot’s death. Agatha Christie wrote it during World War II, as a gift for her daughter should she not survive the bombings, and it was kept in a safe for over thirty years. It was agreed among the family that Curtain would be published finally in 1975 by Collins, her long-standing publishers, and that Sleeping Murder (the Marple story written during the war for her husband, Max) would follow. The reception of Poirot’s death was international, even earning him an obituary in The New York Times; he is still the only fictional character to have received such an honour. The first actor to take on the role of portraying Poirot in his final hours was David Suchet, as the final episode of the series Agatha Christie’s Poirot for which he’d been playing the role for twenty-five years. The episode was adapted in 2013.

Hercule Poirot stood on the cliff-top. For here, many years earlier, there had been a tragic accident – the broken body of a woman was discovered on the rocks at the foot of the cliff. This was followed by the grisly discovery of two more bodies – a husband and wife – shot dead. But who had killed whom? Was it a suicide pact? A crime of passion? Or cold-blooded murder? Poirot delves back into a crime committed 15 years earlier and discovers that, when there is a distinct lack of physical evidence, it’s just as well that ‘old sins leave long shadows.’ ……… This story is part of Agatha Christie’s murder in retrospect series, a collection of stories which look at a crime several years after the fact, piecing together testimonials and witness reports to finally uncover the truth. This time we see Mrs Oliver’s goddaughter, attempting to find out the truth about her deceased parents – who killed whom? It was adapted for Radio in 2006, with a full cast including John Moffatt reprising his role as Poirot and Julie McKenzie (better known for her portrayal of Miss Marple) took on the role of Mrs Oliver. In 2013 the story was adapted as part of the final series of Agatha Christie’s Poirot and featured David Suchet and Zoë Wanamaker in the lead roles.
