‘Niccolò Machiavelli is misunderstood,’ argues Jonathan Powell in his twenty-first-century reworking of the Italian philosopher’s influential masterpiece, The Prince. Taking the lessons Machiavelli derived from his experience as an official in fifteenth-century Florence, Powell shows how these lessons can still apply today. Illustrating each of Machiavelli’s maxims with a description of events that occurred during Tony Blair’s time as Prime Minister, The New Machiavelli is designed to be The Prince for modern times. * Tony Blair’s Chief of Staff from 1994 – 2007, Jonathan Powell recounts the inside story of that period – drawing on his own unpublished diaries. He tackles the critics of Blair’s ‘sofa government’ and gives a frank account of the intimate details of the internal political rows, the failure to join the Euro or hold a referendum on the European constitution, the struggle with the hauliers strike and the foot-and-mouth outbreak that postponed the 2001 election, the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo, as well as the peace negotiations in Northern Ireland, the relations with Clinton, Bush and Chirac, thebanning of fox-hunting, the triumphs and failures of spin and the scandals and inquiries – ranging from Bernie Ecclestone to the police investigation into ‘cash for peerages’. * Like The Prince, The New Machiavelli is short, stark and clear. It provides a gripping account of life inside ‘the bunker’ of Number 10 and draws lessons from those experiences, not just for political leaders but for anyone today who has access to the levers of power.

The Argyle family is far from pleased to discover one of its number has been posthumously pardoned for murder – if Jacko Argyle didn’t kill his mother, who did? Dr. Arthur Calgary takes a ferry across the Rubicon River to Sunny Point, the home of the Argyle family. Two years before, the matriarch of the family was murdered and a son, Jack, was convicted and sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison. Throughout the trial Jack had maintained his innocence, claiming he was hitchhiking on the night of the murder and he had been picked up by a middle-aged man in a dark car. Unable to locate this mystery man the police viewed Jack’s as a lie. Calgary was the stranger in question, but he arrives too late for Jack – who succumbs to pneumonia after serving just six months of his sentence. Feeling a sense of duty to the Argyles, Calgary is surprised when his revelation has a disturbing effect on the family – it means one of the family is a murderer. …….Two years after Jacko was convicted of the murder of his adopted mother and has died in jail, his alibi steps forward. Dr Calgary had been out of the country during the trial and only heard news of it upon his return. Certain that Jacko was innocent, Dr Calgary takes it upon himself to investigate the past. A psychological endeavour on Agatha Christie’s part, this story signifies a shift in style from some of her earlier, light works, and focuses largely on conversation, memory and perception, as each sibling suspects each other of the murder of their somewhat eccentric foster mother. The book was dedicated “To Billy Collins with affection and gratitude”. It was he who had convinced Christie to leave her one-sided deal with the Bodley Head, the publishers of her first six books, and to switch to William Collins Sons & Co in 1926. Now known as HarperCollins, they are Agatha Christie’s UK and US publishers to this day. It was first published in 1958 and it was in 1984 that the story was first adapted for film. It starred Donald Sutherland, Faye Dunaway and Christopher Plummer, and featured an interesting soundtrack that is often thought to conflict with the atmosphere of the film. In 2007, the story featured Miss Marple as part of the ITV television series, played by Geraldine McEwan. In 2018 new TV adaptation of Ordeal by Innocence was broadcast with an all-star cast, including Bill Nighy, Eleanor Tomlinson and Anna Chancellor.

For an instant the two trains ran together, side by side. In that frozen moment, Elspeth witnessed a murder. Helplessly, she stared out of her carriage window as a man remorselessly tightened his grip around a woman’s throat. The body crumpled. Then the other train drew away. But who, apart from Miss Marple, would take her story seriously? After all, there were no suspects, no other witnesses… and no corpse. …… The story went through more title changes than any of Christie’s other books. The time in the title changed from 4.15 to 4.30 then 4.54 before becoming 4.50, although the original manuscript has the title 4.54 From Paddington. It was originally published in the US as What Mrs McGillicuddy Saw! Christie introduces Lucy Eyelesbarrow, a young professional housekeeper who helps Miss Marple do her leg work. Together they solve the mystery. Four years after its release in 1961, Margaret Rutherford played her first role as Miss Marple in a TV adaptation of 4.50 From Paddington. It was later adapted by the BBC in 1988 starring Joan Hickson as Miss Marple, and then again in 2004 for ITV where Geraldine McEwan played the much-loved sleuth. June Whitfield starred as Miss Marple in BBC Radio 4’s dramatisation in 2005. The story was adapted into a Tommy and Tuppence adventure titled Le Crime est Notre Affair for French cinema in 2008 by Pascal Thomas. In 2010, this story became one of the first Miss Marple PC games in a seek and find challenge.

A charity murder game at a Devon house turns into the real thing. Sir George and Lady Stubbs, the hosts of a village fête, hit upon the novel idea of staging a mock murder mystery. In good faith, Ariadne Oliver, the well known crime writer, agrees to organise their murder hunt. Despite weeks of meticulous planning, at the last minute Ariadne calls her friend Hercule Poirot for his expert assistance. Instinctively, she senses that something sinister is about to happen…Beware – nobody is quite what they seem! …….. Dead Man’s Folly sees the return of Ariadne Oliver, who summons Poirot to a country house to investigate a lingering suspicion, which she fears might lead to something serious. The country house in question was inspired by Agatha Christie’s own holiday home, Greenway House in Devon, which looks over the River Dart and contains many of the features mentioned in the novel. Now owned and managed by the National Trust, it was also used in the filming of the TV adaptation in 2013, starring David Suchet and Zoë Wanamaker, one of the final episodes in series 13 of Agatha Christie’s Poirot. The main plot first saw the light of day in the form of a novella only recently published as Hercule Poirot and the Greenshore Folly. In 1954, Agatha Christie wrote the story with the intention of donating the proceeds to a fund set up to buy stained glass windows for her local church at Churston Ferrers, and she filled the story with references to local places, including her own home of Greenway. But having completed it, she decided instead to expand the story into a full-length novel, Dead Man’s Folly, which was published two years later, and donated a Miss Marple story (Greenshaw’s Folly) to the church fund instead. Dead Man’s Folly was dramatised for BBC Radio 4 in 2007, starring John Moffatt as Poirot and Julie McKenzie (better known for her role as Miss Marple) as Ariadne Oliver. I-play released a downloadable hidden objects game in 2009 based on the story and a graphic novel adaptation was published in late 2012.

A young woman with nothing to live for is persuaded to embark on a suicide mission to find a missing scientist. When a number of leading scientists disappear without trace, concern grows within the international intelligence community. Are they being kidnapped? Blackmailed? Brainwashed? One woman appears to have the key to the mystery. Unfortunately, Olive Betteron now lies in a hospital bed, dying from injuries sustained in a Moroccan plane crash. Meanwhile, in a Casablanca hotel room, Hilary Craven prepares to take her own life. But her suicide attempt is about to be interrupted by a man who will offer her an altogether more thrilling way to die. …… A woman thinks she has nothing to live for – bereaved, divorced – she is saved from suicide by an opportunity to die in an altogether more thrilling way. Nuclear scientists, international intrigue and a touch of romance, Agatha Christie takes her readers on a wild excursion far from the country houses and cosy murders of England. Christie based this book partly on the activities of two famous physicists of the early 1950s: Bruno Ponecorvo, who defected to Russia, and Emil Fuchs, who spied for the Russians. It is another of Christie’s light-hearted thriller novels featuring a daring and fearless heroine.

Miss Marple senses danger when she visits a friend living in a Victorian mansion which doubles as a rehabilitiation centre for delinquents. Her fears are confirmed when a youth fires a revolver at the administrator, Lewis Serrocold. Neither is injured. But a mysterious visitor, Mr Gilbrandsen, is less fortunate – shot dead simultaneously in another part of the building. Pure coincidence? Miss Marple thinks not, and vows to discover the real reason for Mr Gilbrandsen’s visit. …….. Like many Agatha Christie novels, They Do It with Mirrors was first published in a condensed form. The April 1952 issue of the US edition of Cosmopolitan saw the publication of Murder With Mirrors with illustrations by Joe Bowler and in the UK the novel was serialised in the weekly magazine John Bull in six abridged instalments with illustrations by George Ditton. Dodd, Mead published the true first edition in 1952 (again calling it Murder with Mirrors) with Collins Crime Club publishing in November that year under Christie’s preferred title. Murder with Mirrors, an adaptation starring Helen Hayes was broadcast by CBS in 1985. The BBC adapted it in 1982 with Joan Hickson as Miss Marple. The film was basically faithful to the novel, with the exception that Alex survives the attack on his life. In 2009 it was Julia McKenzie’s turn to be Miss Marple in ITV’s adaptation – the rich Ruth van Rydock was played by Joan Collins. Some elements of the plot were also incorporated into the 1964 film Murder Ahoy!, which starred Margaret Rutherford as Miss Marple, along with a token tribute to The Mousetrap. The house is changed to a retired ship. Overall, Christie was rather unimpressed with the dramatic changes which bear little resemblance to her original work. In 2001 Radio 4 broadcast a dramatisation of They Do it with Mirrors with June Whitfield as Miss Marple.

They Came to Baghdad book pdf download By Agatha Christie

Baghdad is the chosen location for a secret summit of superpowers, concerned but not convinced, about the development of an, as yet, unidentified and undescribed secret weapon. Only one man has the proof that can confirm the nature of this fantastic secret weapon – a British agent named Carmichael. Unfortunately the criminal organisation responsible for the weapon’s development will stop at nothing to prevent him entering Baghdad and presenting his proof to the assembled delegates. Can Carmichael enter the city against such odds? Into this explosive situations appears Victoria Jones, a girl with a yearning for adventure who gets more than she bargains for when a wounded Carmichael dies in her arms in her hotel room. Now, if only she could make sense of his last words ‘…Lucifer…Basrah…Lefarge…’ ……. From a classic Miss Marple (A Murder is Announced, 1950) to the deserts of Iraq. Hot on the heels of the success of her “Fiftieth” book, Collins licensed a serialisation of They Came to Baghdad to John Bull the weekly magazine which ran from January to March 1951. The Collins Crime Club first edition followed on the 5th March. Agatha and Max Mallowan kept a house in Baghdad for many years and she knew the city very well. Although a departure from her usual murder mysteries, the novel was well received on publication. Anthony Boucher in The New York Times thought it was “All in all, the most satisfactory novel in some years from one of the most satisfying of novelists.” An interesting comparison can be made between the romance themes of this novel and The Man in the Brown Suit, which is also primarily an adventure novel, rather than a straight whodunnit. In that book, the exciting, mysterious young man that falls into the heroine’s room ends up as the romantic hero. In Baghdad, an exciting, mysterious young man also falls into the heroine’s room, but he is disposed of, as is the other exciting, mysterious young man that the heroine has followed to Baghdad. A more conventional and staid archaeologist ends up as the romantic hero; Christie herself was married to Mallowan by this date.

A Murder is Announced book pdf download By Agatha Christie

Promoted on both sides of the Atlantic as Agatha Christie’s 50th book and published in 1950 by William Collins, A Murder is Announced is a staple of crime fiction and is often considered the best of all the Miss Marple novels. The villagers of Chipping Cleghorn, including Jane Marple, are agog with curiosity over an advertisement in the local gazette which reads: ‘A murder is announced and will take place on Friday October 29th, at Little Paddocks at 6.30 p.m.’ A childish practical joke? Or a hoax intended to scare poor Letitia Blacklock? Unable to resist the mysterious invitation, a crowd begins to gather at Little Paddocks at the appointed time when, without warning, the lights go out… ….. More than a simple murder mystery, this is a story of redemption set in the throes of post-war muddle and discomfort. Miss Marple, on holiday in nearby Medenham Wells, is ably assisted by Inspector Craddock who went on to appear in Sanctuary, 4.50 from Paddington and The Mirror Crack’d from Side to Side. This is one of Christie’s most successful conjuring tricks, the physical mechanics actually tested out on her own neighbours in Wallingford, and as usual some of the best, and in retrospect, most infuriating clues are verbal: in this case, you could even say typographical. Agatha Christie even allowed herself a small inhouse joke – the vicarage cat in A Murder is Announced received the rather grand name Tiglath Pileser, after an Assyrian king whose warrior artefacts were discovered on one of her and husband’s archaeological excavations. This story was the first Miss Marple to be adapted for television in 1956, with Gracie Fields in the starring role, alongside Roger Moore. It was later adapted for the stage by Leslie Darbon and opened in London at the Vaudeville Theatre in 1977 after a try out in Brighton. Set in “present day”, it is one of the few stage plays to feature Miss Marple. It wasn’t until 1985 that Joan Hickson revived the story for TV in the BBC’s adaptation and it was then adapted again almost twenty years later, in 2004, starring Geraldine McEwan as Miss Marple. In 2005, BBC Radio 4 produced a dramatisation which featured June Whitfield as Miss Marple.

Lucy Angkatell invited Hercule Poirot to lunch. To tease the great detective, her guests stage a mock murder beside the swimming pool. Unfortunately, the victim plays the scene for real. As his blood drips into the water, John Christow gasps one final word: ‘Henrietta’. In the confusion, a gun sinks to the bottom of the pool. Poirot’s enquiries reveal a complex web of romantic attachments. It seems everyone in the drama is a suspect – and each a victim of love. ……… First published as a novel in the US in 1946 by Dodd, Mead and Company, The Hollow remains an example of classic Christie: a gathering of guests at a country house is disturbed by a sudden death and luckily Poirot is in attendance. The main players include a downtrodden wife, her successful husband, and the reappearance of an old flame. It was originally published in the US as Murder after Hours. Ignoring her daughter Rosalind’s protests, Agatha Christie decided to adapt The Hollow for stage, affectionately describing Rosalind as having “the valuable role in life of eternally trying to discourage me without success”. So the play was adapted, Poirot ousted, and it was produced in 1951 under the same title, The Hollow. One reviewer described it as “ingenious entertainment”. It was adapted for TV in 2004 and starred David Suchet. Some changes were made to the narrative, but overall it remained fairly true to the novel.

Towards Zero book pdf download By Agatha Christie

An elderly widow is murdered at a clifftop seaside house… What is the connection between a failed suicide attempt, a wrongful accusation of theft against a schoolgirl, and the romantic life of a famous tennis player? To the casual observer, apparently nothing. But when a houseparty gathers at Gull’s Point, the seaside home of an elderly widow, earlier events come to a dramatic head. It’s all part of a carefully paid plan – for murder. ………. This is often thought to be one of Agatha Christie’s finest stories and is the last of the five novels to feature Superintendant Battle. The story itself came together quickly and clearly, as can be seen from Christie’s notebooks. Her notes are detailed and closely resemble the published version – she even drew a map of the coastline around Gull’s Point, which plays an important part in the story. Names and motivations underwent slight changes from the first notes, and almost at the point of publication, Christie reworked the ending to the one we are familiar with now, though unfortunately nothing of her ‘first’ ending survives. Many of Christie’s novels were first serialised in magazines and Towards Zero was no exception. Collier’s Magazine with a circulation of over 2.5 million at the time published the novel in 3 parts in May 1944. Her American publishers Dodd Mead followed with the true first edition in June and Collins published their hardback in July 1944. In 1956 the novel was dramatised by Agatha Christie and playwright Gerald Verner, produced by Peter Saunders, and opened at the St James’s Theatre in London’s West End on 4th September. The 1995 film Innocent Lies was originally based on the novel but the connection was never used to promote the film as the script was unacceptable to the family. The story was then adapted for British television in 2007 with the addition of Geraldine McEwan as Miss Marple. Also in 2007 a French production company released a more faithful feature film adaptation, L’Heure Zéro, which starred François Morel as Commissaire Martin Bataille (‘battle’ in French). More recently still in 2010, BBC Radio 4 dramatised the novel for its afternoon play slot.
