عن المسرحية: لا يخفى الأديب الكبير توفيق الحكيم اعجابه بالحمير وبعالم الحمير.. وهو يهرب من الرقابة الامنية بان يتحدث حديثه على فم الحمير، بل انه في هذه المسرحية يتخيل انه جالس على مكتبه مستغرق في التأمل والتفكير ويدخل عليه حمار ويقدم نفسه له بانه حمار الحكيم القديم، وقد كان الحكيم فعلاً تخلف عن الكتابة عن الحمير، وكان آخر ما كتبه رواية حمار الحكيم عام 1940م ولكن يأتي هذا بعد ربع قرن من الزمان 1975م.. ويعتب الحمار على الحكيم انه يتجاهله دائماً ويحتقره، ولكن هذا لا يمنع من كونه موجوداً يفكر.. انا افكر اذن انا موجود، ولكن الحمار يققول انا موجود اذن انا افكر.. ويستأذن الحمار في الجلوس ويقول للحكيم ساعرض عليك بعض ما اعرف عنك وعن غيرك من الحمير، ثم يستدرك الكلام غيرك من المفكرين والمؤلفين، ويناقش الحمار مع الحكيم معاني ومغازي ألف ليلة وليلة التي كتب عنها الحكيم شهرزاد، وهي مسرحية صدرت عام 1934م.. والحمار طبعاً فاهم ومتذكر رغم مضي المدة، ويناقش الحمار هنا أن نهاية كتاب الف ليلة يختلف عن نهاية كتاب الحكيم، فلقد قدم كتاب الف ليلة وليلة نهاية القصة، بان عاش شهرزاد وشهريار في ثبات ونبات وخلفوا صبيان وبنات.. ولكن الحكيم يختم مسرحية شهرزاد بان شهريار يهجر زوجته ويترك قصره ويخرج هائماً على وجهه في الخلاء، ويقدم الحمار فكرة جديدة عن الخلاء ونهاية اخرى لشهريار.. ومسرحية الحمير& لتوفيق الحكيم تحتوي على اربعة مشاهد هي الحمار يفكر.. الحمار يؤلف.. سوق الحمير.. حصص الحبوب.. واذا كان الحمار يفكر فلابد أن الحمار يؤلف.. ولكن سوق الحمير جعل اثنين عاطلين يشاغل احدهما فلاح اشترى حماراً.. والعاطل الثاني يفك عقدة الحمار ويضع الحبل في رقبته.. وهو بهذا قد وجد عملاً، لان الحمار يعمل ويأكل وهو مستعد ان يعمل ويأكل ولا يجد فرصة، ولكنه اخذ فرصة الحمار وقرر ان يريح المزارع كحمار، وقال ان السبب انه حمار ان والده نعته بهذا اكثر من مرة، وان الله استجاب لدعاء الاب وصار الابن حماراً.. ولكنه على يد الفلاح الطيب الذي هو من رجال الله الصالحين عاد انساناً ثانية.. والمسرحية نقد لاوضاع اجتماعية سيئة في مصر كانت ثمرة لما سمى بالاشتراكية. ويرى توفيق الحكيم في مقدمة كتابه أنه ينبغي أن يستمر نبض الحياة في الأمة قائماً بوظيفته الحيوية، لانه لا قيمة لحياة بغير وعي وكما ان الوعي قبل ثورة يوليو جعل الأمة تفحص الديمقراطية وتتبين مواضع الزيف فيها.. وطالما نبض الحياة لم يتوقف، فالواجب ان تفحص الاشتراكية.. ومواضع الزيف فيها.. واذا كان المواطن قد قبل محاكمة الديمقراطية المنحرفة، فلماذا لا يقبل فكرة المحاكمة للاشتراكية المزيفة.. واذا كانت ثورة يوليو 1952م حاكمت الديمقراطية المنحرفة لانها ادت الى هزيمة حرب 1948م، فلماذا لا تحاكم الاشتراكية المنحرفة التي ادت الى هزيمة 1967م، وشتان بين نتائج الهزيمتين وخسائر الهزيمتين.. والحكيم مفكر حكيم، فهو لا ينتقد الديمقراطية ولا ينتقد الاشتراكية، ولكنه ينتقد سلبيات التطبيق.

عن المسرحية: أليس من الممكن أن نعرض علي المسرح المادي أمام النظارة، “تراجيديا إغريقية”، مدثرة في غلالة من “العقلية العربية”، يبدو فيها الصراع بين الإنسان والقوى العليا الخفية، دون أن يتجرد الفكر فيها إلي حد يلحقها بالنوع الذهني من المسرحيات؟… للإجابة عن هذا السؤال عكفت وقتاً ليس بالقصير، علي دراسة “سوفوكل”، وانتهيت إلي انتخاب “أوديب” موضوعاً لاختباري!… لماذا اخترت “أوديب” بالذات؟… لأمر قد يبدو عجيباً… ذلك أني قد تأملتها طويلاً، فأبصرت فيها شيئاً، لم يخطر قط علي بال “سوفوكل”!… أبصرت فيها صراعاً ليس بين الإنسان والقدر؛ كما أري الإغريق، ومن جاء بعدهم إلي يومنا هذا، بل أبصرت عين الصراع الخفي الذي قام في مسرحية “أهل الكهف”!… هذا الصراع لم يكن فقط بين الإنسان والزمن، كما اعتاد قراؤها أن يروا، بل هي حرب أخري خفية قل من التفت إليها… حرب بين “الواقع” وبين “الحقيقة”، بين “واقع” رجل بمثل “مشلينيا” عاد من الكهف، فوجد “بريسكا” فأحبها وأحبته!… وكان كل شئ مهيأ، يدعوهما إلي حياة من الرغد والهناء، فإذا حائل يقف بينهما وبين هذا “الواقع” الجميل!… تلك هي “الحقيقة”!… حقيقة هذا الرجل “مشلينيا”، الذي اتضح ل “بريسكا” أنه كان خطيباً لجدتها!.. لقد جاهد المحبان؛ كي ينسيا هذه “الحقيقة” التي قامت تفسد عليهما “الواقع”!.. ولكنهما عجزا بواقعهما الملموس عن دفع هذا الشئ الغامض غير الملموس، الذي يسمى “الحقيقة”!… “أوديب” و “جوكاستا”، ليسا، هما أيضاً، سوى “مشلينيا”، و “بريسكا”… لقد تحابان أيضاً؛ فأفسد ما بينهما علمها بحقيقة أحدهما بالنسبة إلي الآخر!… إن أقوى خصم للإنسان دائماً هو: شبح!… شبح يطلق عليه إسم “الحقيقة”، هذا هو باعثي علي اختيار “أوديب” بالذات… لي فيها نظرتي وفكرتي، ولكن بقي التنفيذ… علي أي وجه من الوجوه أتناول هذه “التراجيديا”؟…
