About the Author: Jennifer Robertson is Professor Emeritus (as of January 2020), Department of Anthropology and Art History, and Penny W. College of Art and Design at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She is also an associate professor in the Departments of Anthropology and Japanese Studies, University of Washington, Seattle. Robertson received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from Cornell University in 1985, where she also received her BA. in Art History in 1975. She has been an Invited Fellow at Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (1996-1997) and an Invited Fellow at the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation (2011-2012). ACLS, SSRC, NEH, Japan Foundation, Abé Foundation, Wenner Gren, and Fulbright are among her other fellowships. Robertson is the creator and general editor of COLONIALISMS, a book series (now closed) from University of California Press. Books in the series explore the historical realities, current significance, and future ramifications of imperial practices with origins and borders outside the “West”. Previously she worked as editor of Critical Asian Studies in Japan and is now a member of the editorial board (http://criticalasianstudies.org). Her seven books and more than eighty articles and chapters cover a wide range of topics ranging from the seventeenth century to the present, including social reform movements and religion, agrarianism, systems and ideologies of gender and sexuality, mass and popular culture, nostalgia and globalization, Japan’s place in anthropology , sex and suicide, theater and performance, votive and folk arts, imperialism and colonialism, eugenics and bioethics, technology and robotics. Her publications have been translated into German, Finnish, French, Hebrew, Japanese and Spanish. She taught graduate and undergraduate courses in anthropological history, theories, and methods; Non-Western Colonies; Art, Identity, and Anthropology; Bio art. photo-based ethnography-robot interaction of mass and popular cultures; Ethnic diversity in Japan; gender, gender and gender; Japanese culture and society, among other topics. Robertson is currently researching, writing and editing articles on the cultural history of Japanese eugenics. art, science and technology; sex and gender systems; Human-robot interfaces in Japan and elsewhere; and biomimetics. Her most recent book is Robo sapiens japanicus: Robots, Gender, Family and the Nation (University of California Press, 2018); Japanese edition is coming. Although her primary specialty is Japan, where she has lived for over two decades, Robertson has also worked in Sri Lanka (1982-1992) and since 1997 has also been working in Israel. About the Author: Mohamed Riad: a contemporary Egyptian geographer, recipient of the State Appreciation Prize. He is considered one of the most prominent professors of political geography, and has great scientific, intellectual and academic contributions through his research, lectures, articles and books. Muhammad Riyad Ahmad Riyad was born in Cairo in 1927, obtained a BA in geography in 1949, and continued his studies until he completed a diploma in Sudanese studies from Fouad I University (currently Cairo University) in 1951, and then obtained a doctorate in anthropology from Vienna University in 1956 After that, he returned to Egypt to work as a geography teacher at the Faculty of Arts at Ain Shams University. The academic activity of Dr. Muhammad Riyad has been active. He toured several Egyptian and Arab universities, including: Beirut Arab University and Qatar University. He also participated in many international conferences in geography and anthropology in Austria, France, Britain, America and Canada. In addition to his interest in geography and its overlap with economics and politics, its relationship to history and its reflection on the form of urbanization and the characteristics of the population; Riad paid special attention to Egyptian issues, spending a lot of effort and time to research and confirm the features of national identity, and analyze developmental and geopolitical problems related to the Egyptian reality. Perhaps one of the most important writings of Dr. Muhammad Riyad is his book co-authored by his wife, Dr. Kawthar Abdel-Rasoul, and they called it: “A Journey in the Time of Nubia”, and it is one of the most important books dealing with the Egyptian Nuba. Riyad has many other books, including: “General Origins in Political Geography and Geopolitics”, “Africa: A Study of the Continent’s Constituents”, “Egypt: The Fabric of People, Place and Time”, “Man: A Study in Gender and Civilization”, and “Transport Geography”. His articles dealt with many pressing contemporary issues; Where he adopts realistic and radical solutions, similar to his call to develop the Suez Canal area into an industrial and commercial region that contributes effectively to the Egyptian economy. In the 1990s, Black Issues in Higher Education recognized him as one of the most influential leaders in the decade. Molefi Kete Asante graduated from Oklahoma Christian College in 1964. He completed his M.A. at Pepperdine University in 1965. He received his Ph.D. from UCLA at the age of 26 in 1968 and was appointed a full professor at the age of 30 at the State University of New York at Buffalo. In 1969 he was the co-founder with Robert Singleton of the Journal of Black Studies. Asante directed UCLA’s Center for Afro American Studies from 1969 to 1973. He chaired the Communication Department at SUNY-Buffalo from 1973-1980. He worked in Zimbabwe as a trainer of journalists from 1980 to 1982. In the Fall of 1984 Dr. Asante became chair of the African American Studies Program at Temple University where he created the first Ph.D. Program in African American Studies in 1987. He has directed more than 140 Ph.D. dissertations. He has written more than 550 articles and essays for journals, books and magazines and is the founder of the theory of Afrocentricity. Asante was born in Valdosta, Ga., one of sixteen children. He is a poet, dramatist, and a painter. His work on African culture and philosophy and African American education has been cited by journals such as the Matices, Journal of Black Studies, Journal of Communication, American Scholar, Daedalus, Western Journal of Black Studies, and Africaological Perspectives. The Utne Reader called him one of the “100 Leading Thinkers” in America. In 2001, Transition Magazine reported “Asante may be the most important professor in Black America.” He has appeared on Nightline, Nighttalk, BET, Macnell Lehrer News Hour, Today Show, the Tony Brown Show, Night Watch, Like It Is and 60 Minutes and more than one hundred local and international television shows. He has appeared in several movies including 500 Years Later, The Faces of Evil, and The Black Candle. In 2002 he received the distinguished Douglas Ehninger Award for Rhetorical Scholarship from the National Communication Association. The African Union cited him as one of the twelve top scholars of African descent when it invited him to give one of the keynote addresses at the Conference of Intellectuals of Africa and the Diaspora in Dakar in 2004. He was inducted into the Literary Hall of Fame for Writers of African Descent at the Gwendolyn Brooks Center at Chicago State University in 2004. In April 2014 he was invited to give a speech at the UN’s General Assembly on Peace in Africa. In 2014 he was invited to be a keynote speaker at the Japan Black Studies Association’s 60th conference in Kyoto, Japan. Dr. Asante holds more than 100 awards for scholarship and teaching including the Fulbright, honorary doctorates from three universities, and is a guest professor at Zhejiang University and Professor Extraordinarius at the University of South Africa. In 1995 he was made a traditional king, Nana Okru Asante Peasah, Kyidomhene of Tafo, Akyem, Ghana. In 2012 he was given the title of Wanadoo of Gao in the court of the Amiru Hassimi Maiga of Songhoy. Dr. Asante has been or is presently a consultant for a dozen school districts. He was the Chair of the United States Commission for FESMAN III for three years. Asante was elected in September, 2009, by the Council of African Intellectuals as the Chair for the Diaspora Intellectuals in support of the United States of Africa. About the Author: William A. Haviland is professor emeritus at the University of Vermont, where he founded the Department of Anthropology and taught for 32 years. He holds a PhD in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania and has conducted research in archaeology in Guatemala and Vermont; ethnography in Maine and Vermont; and physical anthropology in Guatemala. This work has been the basis of many publications in national and international books and journals, as well as in trade publications. His books include The Original Vermonters, co-authored with Marjorie Power, and a technical monograph on ancient Maya settlement. He served as consultant for the award-winning telecourse Faces of Culture, and he is co-editor of the series Tikal Reports, published by the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Dr. Haviland has lectured to many professional and non-professional audiences in Canada, Mexico, Lesotho, South Africa, and Spain, as well as in the United States. A staunch supporter of indigenous rights, he served as expert witness for the Missisquoi Abenaki of Vermont in a case over aboriginal fishing rights. Dr. Haviland received the University Scholar award by the Graduate School of the University of Vermont in 1990; a Certificate of Appreciation from the Sovereign Republic of the Abenaki Nation of Missisquoi, St. Francis/Sokoki Band in 1996; and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Center for Research on Vermont in 2006. Now retired from teaching, he continues his research, writing, and lecturing from the coast of Maine and serves as a trustee for the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor, focused on Maine’s Native American history, culture, art, and archaeology. His most recent books are At the Place of the Lobsters and Crabs (2009) and Canoe Indians of Down East Maine (2012).
