المنهجية العلمية هي في جوهرها مجموعة من القواعد المتفق عليها حول أساليب جمع البيانات والتأكد من صحتها وإجراء التجارب والاستنتاج، وهي نفس القواعد التي يعتمدها عالم الذرة في مختبره عند إجراء اختبارات فلق الذرة، وكذلك عالم الحيوان القابع في غابة لمراقبة سلوك مجموعة من الأسود، وأيضاً عالم الاجتماع أثناء محاورته عصابة من المراهقين بهدف معرفة أسباب ودوافع انحرافهم، وتبقى المنهجية العلمية أهم وأعظم إنجازات النهضة العلمية الحديثة والتي تعتبر صحتها مقبولة ضمن حدود المعرفة الحالية. يستدعي التحدي الكبير الذي يمثله العلم والمنهجية العلمية تقديم الأدلة المقنعة على احتواء الدين الإسلامي لمنهجية بحث أفضل أو مضاهية للمنهجية العلمية، ويكفي في الحد الأدنى إثبات تكافؤ المنهجية الإسلامية مع المنهجية العلمية في جودتها وكفاءتها للاعتقاد بهيمنة العقيدة الإسلامية؛ لأن أعداداً غفيرة من صفوة البشر تضافروا وعلى مدى قرون عدة على وضع وتهذيب وتطوير المنهجية العلمية، مما يبرهن على استحالة أن يكون مصدر المنهجية الإسلامية – إذا ثبتت مضاهاتها للمنهجية العلمية – إنسان بمفرده عاش قبل فترة الازدهار العلمية بأكثر من عشرة قرون. ولا يشترط للاستدلال على وجود منهجية راقية في الإسلام تخصيص سورة أو مجموعة من الآيات لهذا الغرض، فالقرآن الكريم أُنزل في زمن عرف بعصر الجاهلية وعلى قوم غير مكترثين بالمعرفة أو تعلم منهجية بحث، ولكن يكفي كدليل قاطع احتواءه على توجيهات وإشارات واضحة لا تحتاج إلى تأويل ولا يصعب إدراك مقاصدها، تشكل في حصيلتها منهجية بحث صحيحة للتوصل إلى المعرفة الحقة، وهذا هو الهدف من إعداد هذا الكتاب. قبل البحث في النصوص عن الدلائل على وجود المنهجية لابد في البدء من إلقاء نظرة فاحصة على مفهوم المعرفة في نظام المعرفة الإسلامي، والتعرف على مصادر المعرفة ومكوناتها وأدواتها ووسائل الحصول عليها، وهذه هي بعض موضوعات الفصل الأول، والتي ستمهد للانتقال في الفصل الثاني إلى استعراض ومناقشة دور العقل في النظام المعرفي، فإذا تبين بأن للعقل دور ثانوي فسيكون من غير المجدي الاستمرار في البحث عن منهج للبحث، وسيتركز الاهتمام في الفصل الثالث على استكشاف العناصر الأساسية في النظام المعرفي ومنهج البحث مثل المفاهيم والعينات والمعلومات والتحيزات، أما موضوع الفصل الرابع فهو البرهان والتجارب والاستنتاج، ولا شك بأن الاختبار هو أعظم مزايا المنهجية العلمية والتي تجعلها مهيمنة على غيرها من المنهجيات، لذا فمن المهم استكشاف إن كان المنهج الإسلامي شامل لطريقة التجربة والاختبار مفهوماً وتطبيقاً، وبعد اكتمال هذه الموضوعات سيكون ممكناً العودة على البدء لتقييم نظام المعرفة ومنهج البحث في القرآن الكريم، والحكم على جدواه وفاعليته مقارنة بالمنهجية العلمية.

يقول الإمام الغزالي بأن باعثه على تأليف هذا الكتاب، والملقب بمعيار العلم هما غرضان مهمان، أحدهما تفهيم طرق الفكر والنظر، وتنوير مسالك الأقيسة والعبر، فإن العلوم النظرية لماّ لم تكن بالفطرة والغريزة مبذولة وموهوبة، كانت لا محالة مستحصلة مطلوبة، هذا ولما كثر في المعقولات مذلة الأقدام، ومنارات الضلال، ولم تنفك مرآة العقل عما يكدرها من تخليطات الأوهام وتلبيسات الخيال، رتب هذا الكتاب معياراً للنظر والاعتبار، وميزاناً للبحث والافتكار وصيقلاً للذهن، ومشحذاً لقوة الفكر والعقل، فيكون بالنسبة إلى أدلة العقول كالعروض بالنسبة إلى الشعر، والنحو بالإضافة إلى الأعراب، لهذا فإنه لا يمكن التفريق بين فاسد الدليل وقويمه وصحيحه وسقيمه إلا بهذا الكتاب، والباعث الثاني للإمام الغزالي كان الاطلاع على ما أودعه الإمام في كتابه تهافت الفلاسفة، فهو قد ناظرهم بلغتهم وخاطبهم على حكم اصطلاحاتهم التي تواطؤوا عليها في المنطق. وفي هذا الكتاب تنكشف معاني تلك الاصطلاحات، فهذا أخص الباعثين، والأول أعمها وأهمها وذلك لشمول فائدته على جميع العلوم النظرية، العقلية منها والفقهية حيث يعرف الإمام الغزالي بأن النظر في الفقهيات لا يباين النظر في العقليات، في ترتيبه وشروطه وعيارة، بل في مآخذ المقدمات فقط، ويقول بأنه ولما كانت الهمم مائلة في عصره من العلوم إلى الفقه بل مقصورة عليه لذلك تضمن كتابه تصنيفاً في طرق المناظرة فيها مأخذ الخلاف أولاً، وفي باب النظر ثانياً، وفي تحصين المآخذ ثالثاً، وكتاب المبادئ والغابات رابعاً وهو غايته القصوى في هذا البحث الجار على منهاج النظر العقلي في ترتيبه وشروطه، مورداً، من ثم في منهاج الكلام، في هذا الكتاب أمثلة فقهية لتشمل فائدته، فتعم سائر الأصناف جدواه وعائدته.
