كانَ الدكتور «هيرش» عالِمًا فرنسيًّا كبيرًا يشتهرُ بأفكارِه الجريئةِ ونزعتِه للسِّلمِ ونزعِ السلاح. دعَمتْه الحكومةُ الفرنسيةُ وساعَدتْه في إخفاءِ سرِّ اختراعِه الجديد، لكنْ بعدَ ظهورِ ورقةٍ يُزعَمُ أنَّها بخطِّ يدِه وأنَّ بها تعليماتٍ للوصولِ إلى التركيبةِ الكيمائيةِ لهذا الاختراع، بدأَتِ الشكوكُ تثورُ حولَه. وقفَ ضابطٌ فرنسيٌّ خارجَ منزلِ الدكتور «هيرش» ومعَه تلك الورقة، وهو يزعمُ أنَّه جاسوسٌ ألماني، ويدعوه للردِّ على هذا الاتهامِ أو قبولِ المبارَزة. وكالعادةِ وجدَ «الأبُ براون» نفسَه في مسرحِ الأحداثِ أثناءَ وجودِه في فرنسا. فيا تُرى أكانَ الدكتورُ «هيرش» وطنيًّا أم خائنًا؟ وهل ستَجري المبارَزةُ أم لا؟ وهل سيتمكَّنُ «الأبُ براون» من كشفِ اللثامِ عن حقيقةِ الأمر؟ هذا ما سنتعرَّفُ عليه من خلالِ أحداثِ القصة.
