شَقيقانِ يَنحدرانِ من أُسرةٍ أرستقراطيةٍ يمتدُّ تاريخُها إلى العصورِ الوُسطى؛ أحدُهما بلغَ من تديُّنِه أنْ صارَ راعيَ أبرشيةِ القرية، والآخَرُ بلغَ من تهتُّكِه أنْ صارتْ له عَلاقاتٌ غيرُ شريفةٍ مع نساءِ القرية. جمَعَهما للمرةِ الأخيرةِ صباحُ يومٍ عصيب، نصحَ فيه راعي الأبرشيةِ أخاه وحذَّرَه أن تصيبَه صاعقةٌ بسببِ إجرامِه، لكنَّ «نورمان» المنغمِسَ في شَهواتِه لم يُجِبْه إلا بالسُّخرية؛ فمضى «ويلفريد» حزينًا إلى الكنيسةِ راجيًا تطهيرَ رُوحِه ممَّا ألَمَّ بها من كَدَر. لكنَّ مسلسلَ الصدماتِ والغرائبِ لم يَنتهِ بعدُ؛ فها هو مَعتوهُ القريةِ جاثٍ على رُكبتَيه أمامَ مذبحِ الكنيسة! والإسكافيُّ المُلحِدُ يزورُه في خَلوتِه بالكنيسة! لكنَّ أغربَ هذه الأحداثِ وأفظعَها هو تهشُّمُ رأسِ أخيه «نورمان» تحتَ أسوارِ الكنيسة، وبجوارِ جثتِه مِطرقةٌ صغيرة. تُرَى أكان الجانِي عشيقتَه كما ادَّعى الطبيب؟! أم زَوجَها الحدَّادَ الضخمَ كما ظنَّ الإسكافيُّ المُلحِد؟! أم هي صاعِقةٌ حقًّا كما حذَّرَه أخوه، وكما زعمَ الحدَّاد؟! لكنَّ «الأبَ براون» توصَّلَ إلى إجابةٍ غيرِ مُتوقَّعةٍ تمامًا. اقرأ القصةَ وتعرَّفَ على الأحداثِ المُثِيرة.
