استدعى «بوين» — الضابطُ الطبيبُ المُلحَقُ بقواتِ الشرطة — «الأبَ براون» في صباحِ يومٍ قارسِ البرودةِ ليَستعينَ به بعدما وردَتْه رسالةٌ من «أرنولد أيلمر» يَستنجدُ فيها من قاتلٍ يطاردُه. كان «أرنولد» آخِرَ مَن تبقَّى مِن أبناءِ «أيلمر»، الإقطاعيِّ الثريِّ الذي أنجبَ ثلاثةَ أبناء، والذي كان قد تبنَّى صبيًّا قبلَ زواجِه وأوصى بأن يرثَ كلَّ تَرِكتِه بعدَ وفاتِه. غيرَ أنَّ «أرنولد» وشقيقَيه أكَّدوا أنَّ أباهم فعَلَ ذلك تحتَ تأثيرِ تعاويذَ سحريةٍ غامضةٍ ألقاها عليه الابنُ المُتبنَّى، فحكمَت المحكمةُ ببُطلانِ الوصيَّة. استشاطَ شقيقُهم المُتبنَّى غضبًا، وأقسمَ لَيقتلَنَّهم جميعًا. ثم ماتَ شقيقَا «أرنولد» في ظروفٍ غامضةٍ بعدَ يومٍ واحدٍ من تلقِّي كلٍّ منهما رسالةَ تهديدٍ مدموغةً برسمةِ خِنجرٍ مُجنَّح؛ فاستنجدَ «أرنولد» بالشرطةِ بعدما تلقَّى رسالةً مُشابِهة. فهل «بوين» مُحِقٌّ في ظنونِه ومخاوفِه؟ وما عَلاقةُ الخنجرِ المُجنَّحِ بهذه الجرائم؟ هل يَطيرُ كالخفَّاشِ ثم يَنقضُّ على ضَحاياه حاصدًا أرواحَهم؟ وهل يَنجحُ «الأبُ براون» في إنقاذِ الشقيقِ الثالث؟ هذا ما سنَعرفُه في هذه القصةِ المثيرة.
