The Story of Civilization, Volume 11: The Age of Napoleon book pdf download By Will Durant

This is a rather ponderous history of Europe from 1789 to 1815. Heavy on dates, short on story, it points out just how bloody & unthinking the French revolution was & how every faction was constantly jockeying for position & how self-seeking the players were.

Durant completed twenty-one of a proposed twenty-three chapters before his death in 1981, at the age of ninety-six. Those chapters span thousands of years of human history — from Confucius to Shakespeare, from the Roman Empire to the Reformation, finally ending in the eighteenth century. The manuscript was recently found by Will Durant scholar John Little — twenty years after Durant finished it — and its discovery is a major event, not only for lovers of his prose, but for students of history and philosophy the world over. — Heroes of History At the dawn of a new millennium and the beginning of a new century, nothing could be more appropriate than this brilliant book that examines the meaning of human civilization and history and draws from the experience of the past the lessons we need to know to put the future into context and live in confidence, rather than fear and ignorance. Will Durant’s work is marked by his own special quality as a writer — he is tough-minded, optimistic, courageous, and convinced that without a knowledge of the past there is no wisdom to guide us to the future. Heroes of History This book is also available on audio tape and CD format, read by Will and Ariel Durant.

Gegenreformation und Elisabethanisches Zeitalter book pdf download By Will Durant

If there is a linchpin to understanding modern European history, it lies in the period of religious strife & scientific progress between the 1550s & 1650s. In The Age of Reason Begins, Will & Ariel Durant bring together a fascinating network of stories in their discussion of the bumpy road toward the Enlightenment. This is the age of great monarchs & greater artists: on the one hand, Elizabeth the First of England, Philip II of Spain & Henry IV of France; on the other, Shakespeare, Cervantes, Montaigne & Rembrandt. It also encompasses the heyday of Bacon, Galileo, Giordano Bruno & Descartes–the fathers of modern science & philosophy. But it is equally an age of extreme violence, a moment in which all Europe was embroiled in the horrible Thirty Years’ War–in some respects, the real First World War. Whatever the case, this is a chapter in cultural history one can’t set aside.

Karl Heinrich Marx (1818-1883) was a German philosopher, a political economist, and a revolutionary. Marx addressed a wide range of issues; he is most famous for his analysis of history, summed up in the opening line of the introduction to the Communist Manifesto (1848): “The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles. ” Marx believed that capitalism would be replaced by communism. He was both a scholar and a political activist, often called the father of communism. While Marx was a relatively obscure figure in his own lifetime, his ideas began to exert a major influence on workers’ movements shortly after his death. This influence was given added impetus by the victory of the Marxist Bolsheviks in the Russian October Revolution. His most famous works include: The Poverty of Philosophy (1847), Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy (1859), Capital (1867) and The Civil War in France (1871).
