Tanzimat ve Bulgar Meselesi book pdf download By Halil Inalcik

Preface — Introduction — The naming of German warships — Conventions and abbreviations — Part I. Rise and Fall of the Battlefleet. Before the empire — The era of Wilhelm I — The new emperor — The Fleet Law era — The world of the dreadnought — War — I — War — II — Afterglow — Retrospect — Part II. Technical and Career Data. Ships for the Prussian and German navies — Summary of capital ship authorisations — Ship seized by Germany — Ships for export — Appendices. 1. Main armament mountings — 2. Trial results — 3. Organisation of capital ships and cruisers from 1884.;”The battleships of the Third Reich have been written about exhaustively, but there is little in English devoted to their Second Reich predecessors. This new book fills an important gap in the literature of the period by covering these German capital ships in detail and studying the full span of battleship development during this period. The book is arranged as a chronological narrative, with technical details, construction schedules, and ultimate fates tabulated throughout, thus avoiding the sometimes disjointed structure that can result from a class-by-class approach. Heavily illustrated with line drawings and photographs, many from German sources, the book offers readers a fresh visual look at these ships. A key objective of the book is to make available a full synthesis of the published fruits of archival research by German writers found in the pre-World War II books of Koop & Schmolke, Großmer’s on the construction program of the dreadnaught era, Forstmeier & Breyer on World War I projects, and Schenk & Nottelmann’s papers in Warship International. As well as providing data not available in English-language books, these sources correct significant errors in standard English sources.

The Story of Civilization, Volume 7: The Age of Reason Begins book pdf download By Will Durant

If there is a linchpin to understanding modern European history, it lies in the period of religious strife & scientific progress between the 1550s & 1650s. In The Age of Reason Begins, Will & Ariel Durant bring together a fascinating network of stories in their discussion of the bumpy road toward the Enlightenment. This is the age of great monarchs & greater artists: on the one hand, Elizabeth the First of England, Philip II of Spain & Henry IV of France; on the other, Shakespeare, Cervantes, Montaigne & Rembrandt. It also encompasses the heyday of Bacon, Galileo, Giordano Bruno & Descartes–the fathers of modern science & philosophy. But it is equally an age of extreme violence, a moment in which all Europe was embroiled in the horrible Thirty Years’ War–in some respects, the real First World War. Whatever the case, this is a chapter in cultural history one can’t set aside.

The Story of Civilization, Volume 8: The Age of Louis XIV book pdf download By Will Durant

subtitle: A History of European Civilization in the Period of Pascal, Moliere, Cromwell, Milton, Peter the Great, Newton & Spinoza 1648-1715 In the 8th volume of their Story of Civilization, the Durants explore the apex of European civilization to that time, the years 1648-1715. It’s the era of the “Sun King,” Louis XIV, one of the most powerful rulers in Western history. It’s also the pinnacle of Dutch culture, the heyday of Vermeer & William of Orange, later King of England. All this forms the backdrop for the Durants’ real focus: the intellectual character of the age. Encompassing Newton & Leibniz, among others, THE AGE OF LOUIS XIV marks a momentous transition: the passage from superstition & intolerance to science & philosophy. This is the period on which the foundation for modernity rests.

s/t: A history of civilization in western europe from 1715 to 1756, with special emphasis on the conflict between religion & philosophy Volume 9 in THE STORY OF CIVILIZATION, THE AGE OF VOLTAIRE, is the biography of a great man as well as the story of ideas & events that culminated in the French Revolution. But the revolution turned inward & set the stage for Napoleon, a disaster for Europe in general & for the French in particular. Of notable interest to the general reader is the Durants’ conclusion that it was English ideas of skepticism, scientific experiment, “natural rights”, constitutional government & individual liberty that started the French on their road to ruin.

The Story of Civilization, Volume 10: Rousseau and Revolution book pdf download By Will Durant

Durant’s purpose in writing The Story of Civilization was not to create a definitive scholarly production but to make a large amount of information accessible and comprehensible to the educated public in the form of a comprehensive “composite history.” Given the massive undertaking in creating these 11 volumes over 50 years, errors and incompleteness have occurred; yet for an attempt as large in breadth of time and scope as this, there are no similar works to compare. As Durant says in the preface to his first work, Our Oriental Heritage: I wish to tell as much as I can, in as little space as I can, of the contributions that genius and labor have made to the cultural heritage of mankind – to chronicle and contemplate, in their causes, character and effects, the advances of invention, the varieties of economic organization, the experiments in government, the aspirations of religion, the mutations of morals and manners, the masterpieces of literature, the development of science, the wisdom of philosophy, and the achievements of art. I do not need to be told how absurd this enterprise is, nor how immodest is its very conception … Nevertheless I have dreamed that despite the many errors inevitable in this undertaking, it may be of some use to those upon whom the passion for philosophy has laid the compulsion to try to see things whole, to pursue perspective, unity and time, as well as to seek them through science in space. … Like philosophy, such a venture [as the creation of these 11 volumes] has no rational excuse, and is at best but a brave stupidity; but let us hope that, like philosophy, it will always lure some rash spirits into its fatal depths. -Will Durant, Our Oriental Heritage, preface Rousseau and Revolution received the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction in 1968.
