ليس هناك شك فى أننا سنة 1967 واجهنا تجربة مزعجة مهما كانت تسميات لها : نكسة , هزيمة , أو أى وصف آخر . وأن كنت شخصيا لا أميل الى وصفها الهزيمة . ذلك لأن الهزيمة تعنى تسليم طرف -بالكامل – لطرف أخر . فاذا رفض هذا الطرف أن يسلم وهو مالك لأرادته – فهو اذن غير مهزوم . وأكثر من هذا فإن هذا الطرف اذا صمم على المقاومة وأعطى نفسه أمكانية العودة بأقتدار الى ميدان الصراع , فهو إذن لم ينهزم , بل هو – أكثر من ذلك – استعاد لقوته فرصتها من جديد حتى فى إحراز النصر . ولعلنا نتذكر أن أستاذة أبتداء من ” ميكافيللى ” وحتى ” فوهللر ” يقولون إن أى حرب لها هدفان : 1- هدف أبتدائى : تحطيم القوة العسكرية لدى العدو . 2- هدفى نهائى : تحطيم أرادته . وفى 5 يونيو سنة 1967 نجح الطامعون فى هذه الأمة فى” تحطيم قوتها المسلحة , وكان هذا هو الهدف الأبتدائى . ولكنهم لم ينجحوا فى تحقيق هدفهم النهائى وهو ” تحطيم إرادتها ” .. وهم الأن يريدون منها أن تنسى ذلك , رغم أن هذا الهدف النهائى لم يتحقق حتى فى سنة 1967 , كما أن الهدف الأبتدائى بدوره أفلت منهم أيضا فى نفس السنة , لأن أرادة الأمة دفعتها الى إعادة بناء قوتها المسلحة , والعودة بسرعة الى الميدان القاتل حتى وصلت من 5 يونيو 1967 الــــى 6 أكتوبر

يكشف محمد حسنين هيكل في كتابه هذا عن وقائع التحقيق السياسي الذي مثل فيه كمتهم أمام المدعي الاشتراكي. وأما عن تفاصيله وما ورد فيه من أقوال واتهامات وتداعيات تستحق الاهتمام، فالصفحات كفيلة بتعريف القارئ عن حيثيات تستدعي التأمل والانتباه، وأما عن سبب نشر هيكل لهذه الوقائع فلأن حكايته (هيكل) مع المدعي الاشتراكي شغلت وما زالت تشغل أفكار كثيرين، لأن ما نشر عن وقائع هذا التحقيق في قليل، لكن ذلك، وكما يراه هيكل نفسه، لم يكن يرجع إلى سرية التحقيق بقدر ما كان يرتبط بـ”اتفاق صمت” وهو لا يقول “مؤامرة صمت”، ذلك أن الذين آثروا الصمت تعلموا الدرس وفهما أن الكلام بغير أوامر-كثير المخاطر، في حين أن الصمت-ولو بغير أوامر-قد يكون حصين حصن أمان، هذا من ناحية، ولغياب مجلس الشعب-هيئة المحلفين في هذه الحالة-طوال التحقيق أو ممثلاً فيه، من ناحية ثانية، أصبح الاعتقاد لدى هيكل بأن نشر تلك الوقائع أصبح واجباً عليه. وبالإضافة إلى هذا وذاك، كان لا بد لهذه الوقائع أن ترى النور لتمثل رد هيكل الذي كان غائباً خلال الحملات التي تعرض لها لسنوات طوال ابان أزمته تلك، حيث لم يكن لديه من فرصة للرد ليطرح فيها وجهة نظره، وليقول من خلالها كلمته بما يمكن أن تساويه، رغم أن ذلك واحد من أبسط حقوق الإنسان. وهكذا فإن محاضر التحقيق الذي أجراه معه المدعي الاشتراكي كانت أول مناسبة تتيح له طرح وجهة نظره في مصر، وهو يقول ويقول كلمته على هذه الصفحات بما يمكن أن تساويه في وثيقة رسمية.
