In his philosophical studies and writings, he presents a solid philosophical language, an outstanding ability to analyze and criticize, and an accurate understanding of philosophical terminology. Fouad Zakaria is also the author of the article (Secularism is the Solution) in response to the call (Islam is the solution), and the author of the theory that the Western cultural invasion is a myth that does not exist, and one of the most prominent opponents of the Salafi approach and its critics, he ridiculed the contemporary Islamic trends committed to this approach. He claimed that, by her commitment to it, she was focusing on adhering to the form of Islam rather than its content. He is accused of being a non-revolutionary who did not criticize the negative aspects of Abdel Nasser’s rule and that he is one of the liberal elite who were not willing to pay the price for their political and intellectual positions, so they hypocritical and did not announce themselves until after Abdel Nasser’s death. They include in this elite Tawfiq al-Hakim, Naguib Mahfouz and Dr. Mustafa Mahmoud, Tharwat Abaza, Saleh Jawdat, Anis Mansour, and Jalal Al-Din Al-Hamamsi.

(افلاطون)جمهورية أفلاطون book pdf download By Plato

Ancient Views on the Quality of Life book pdf download By Alex Michalos

This monograph describes the contributions to our current understanding of quality of life made by the most important ancient philosophers in the Western Tradition. It does so from the point of view of a contemporary researcher in quality of life or human well-being. Revisiting ancient texts from about 600 BCE to 300 BCE, the book explores the earliest ideas in recorded western philosophical and scientific history that were significantly related to current research and understanding of the quality of life or well-being for individuals and communities. It examines the problems and solutions found in these texts and their connection to still current fundamental issues and questions such as: ‘What is a good life?’, ‘What is the best sort of person to be?’ ‘How can one tell if one’s society is making progress to some sort of desirable state or falling backwards?’ The book shows that across time and across many cultures, the human species bears some remarkable similarities.

Philosophical Foundations of Quality of Life book pdf download By Alex Michalos

This first volume has as its main focus the philosophical foundations of Michalos’ work and describes it in the broad context of the study of logic, the philosophy of social sciences, and a general theory of value. After distinguishing things that have value from the value that things might have, it describes the foundations of a pragmatic theory of value. This theory plays a key role in the author’s research on the quality of life and connects his empirical research to the philosophical tradition of the American pragmatists William James, Ralph Barton Perry, John Dewey and Clarence Irving Lewis. The volume addresses various aspects and issues concerning decision making, including decision procedures used in committees, used for assessing the acceptability of scientific theories and new technologies, procedures for a science court, ethical issues involved in the formation of beliefs, some limitations of classical economists’ alleged postulates of rational preference, and the importance of analytic guides to decision making. Finally, it describes the organization of the Social Sciences Federation of Canada and a formal accounting system for scientific research.

Development of Quality of Life Theory and Its Instruments book pdf download By Alex Michalos

The focus of this volume is on the further development of the Quality of Life Theory and the means to measure the concept. The volume summarizes Michalos’ fundamental assumptions about the nature of quality of life or human well-being and explains in detail the two variable theory of the quality of life. It gives an update of the journal Social Indicators Research after forty years, an explanation of the role of community indicators in connecting communities, and a critical review of the much publicized Stiglitz, Sen and Fitoussi report. It deals with the multiple discrepancies theory (MDT), the empirical theory designed to provide the foundation of the pragmatic theory of value. Other concepts discussed in this volume are the stability, sensitivity, and other different features of measures of domain and life satisfaction and happiness, measures of arts-related activities and beliefs, measures of knowledge, attitudes and behaviour concerning sustainable development, and the role of quality of life in sustainable development research. The volume concludes with discussions on connections between social indicators and communities, aspects of community quality of life in Prince George, British Columbia and Jasper, Alberta, and British Columbians’ expectations and attitudes going into the third millennium.

Ethics: A Very Short Introduction book pdf download By Simon Blackburn

Our self-image as moral, well-behaved creatures is dogged by scepticism, relativism, hypocrisy, and nihilism, by the fear that in a Godless world science has unmasked us as creatures fated by our genes to be selfish and tribalistic, or competitive and aggressive. In this clear introduction to ethics Simon Blackburn tackles the major moral questions surrounding birth, death, happiness, desire and freedom, showing us how we should think about the meaning of life, and how we should mistrust the soundbite-sized absolutes that often dominate moral debates.

Think: A Compelling Introduction to Philosophy book pdf download By Simon Blackburn

I have never taken a formal class in philosophy but have for a long time been interested in the problems and methods studied by it. So I had to experiment with introductory books including Blackburn’s Think. I present here a brief review of the book along with other ideas for the interested reader. Think is an introduction to philosophy organized around the following main philosophical themes:: 1 – Knowledge – Descartes’ evil demon and the “cogito”; 2 – Mind – if I am not a brain in a vat what can I tell about your conciouness; 3 – Free Will – versus determinism; 4 – The Self – souls and credulism; 5 – God – ontological, cosmological, intelligent design and miracle based arguments; 6 – Reasoning – language and logic; 7 – The World – a wrap up. Each theme is discussed in a chapter supported by quotations from classical philosophical texts from Descartes, Spinoza, Kant, Schopenhauer, Wittgenstein, among others. Each chapter increases in complexity to the point that, in many cases, I had to go back a few pages and re-read entire sections to make sure I was following the thought exercises. I struggled the most across the “Self” chapter, and by going back a couple of pages at a time I probably ended up having read the entire chapter three times or more. Not that the chapter was specially convoluted but because the ideas and thought exercises were very difficult to me. The best chapter in my opinion was the one about God which evaluated the ontological, cosmological, intelligent design and miracle based arguments for and against God’s existence. I believe the choice of quotations, the didactical construction of explanations and the pace of the book were all very good but I was not too impressed by the quality of the prose. So my conclusion is that it is a competent though not memorable book. Since it is slightly more expensive than other introductory tomes please consider these other ideas:: 1 – Sophie’s World: A Novel About the History of Philosophy by Jostein Gaarder – An excellent introduction more appropriate for teenagers and young adults (I read it when I was about 20 years old); 2 – Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance – An Inquire into Values by Robert Pirsig – Criticized by some, loved by many. Could be the Sophie for grownups (I read it last year at 36 years old); 3 – The Story of Philosophy: The Lives and Opinions of the World’s Greatest Philosophers by Will Durant – This is my all time favourite. Will Durant, the historian, has an admirable prose; 4 – History of Western Philosophy by Bertrand Russell – History of philosophy by a leading philosopher and mathematician and also an engaging writer. If you decide to go with “Think” you may want to check out as a companion book “The Blank Slate” by Steven Pinker. The Blank Slate is a book on behavioural science, it carries a praise by Simon Blackburn and maybe not coincidentally both books discuss the same main themes but, at times, from different perspectives making for a good complement. The Blank Slate is a five star book and was a Pulitzer finalist. I have written a review on it. Leonardo Alves – Brazil – 2010

Lust: The Seven Deadly Sins book pdf download By Simon Blackburn

In the uneven 7 Deadly sins series, copublished by Oxford University press and the New York Public Library, three of the volumes are stinkers, one is above average, and three are quite good. The best of the lot is Robert Thurman’s treatment of anger; third best is Francine Prose on gluttony. Second place goes to philosopher Simon Blackburn’s witty, urbane, and analytically precise treatment of lust. In Blackburn’s hands (pardon the bad pun) lust loses the automatically pessimistic sheen of sin that the Christian tradition has bestowed on it. As Blackburn says (p. 27), “we [should] no more criticize lust because it can get out of hand, than we [should][ criticize hunger because it can lead to gluttony or thirst because it can lead to drunkenness.” Looked at in itself, lust–desire for sexual pleasure–is neutral. Context and disposition are the dividing lines in separating moral from immoral lust. Lust that fully recognizes the partner as a fellow human being and desires his or her sexual fulfillment in the encounter is, says Blackburn, the optimal situation. There’s a kind of feedback look that occurs when sexual partners mutually recognize one another: I desire your pleasure, and seeing it enhances my pleasure, which enhances yours… Blackburn refers to this as Hobbesian unity (from a passage from Hobbes in which he writes of the relationship between imagination and mutual pleasuring in sex). This doesn’t mean that all lust which falls short of Hobbesian unity is tarnished. One of the healthier aspects of Blackburn’s approach is his recognition of degrees. As he says (p. 133), “if Hobbesian unity cannot be achieved, it can at least be aimed at, and even if it cannot be aimed at, it can be imagined and dreamed.” Blackburn’s book achieves what all good philosophical treatments do: it simply has the ring of familiar common sense.

Ruling Passions: A Theory of Practical Reasoning book pdf download By Simon Blackburn

Simon Blackburn puts forward a compelling and original philosophy of human motivation and morality. Why do we behave as we do? Can we improve? Is our ethics at war with our passions, or is it an upshot of those passions? Blackburn seeks the answers to such questions in an exploration of the nature of moral emotions and the structures of human motivation. He develops a naturalistic ethics, which integrates our understanding of ethics with the rest of our understanding of the world we live in. His theory does not debunk the ethical by reducing it to the non-ethical, and it banishes the spectres of scepticism and relativism that have haunted recent moral philosophy. Ruling Passions reveals how ethics can maintain its authority even though it is rooted in the very emotions and motivations that it exists to control.
