كان “ستيفان زفايج ” مؤرخا دقيقا واسع الإطلاع , روائيا واسع الخيال قوي الأسلوب , وعالما نفسيا فهم الطبيعة البشرية ووقف على الكثير من أسرارها وأتجاهاتها وكان إلى ذلك كله فنانا مرهف الحس , يعشق الجمال ويؤمن بعظمة الإنسان وقيمة النفس البشرية , ومن هنا , كان يبغض “الدكتاتورية” في صورها المختلفة الظاهرة والخفية , ويتألم أشد الألم لأساليب العنف والظلم والإضطهاد . لقد كان زفايج يأمل أن يرى عناصر الخير تنمو وتزدهر كلما تقدم ركب المدنية وموكب الحضارة , ولكنه رأها تتضائل وتنكمش , -أو هكذا قيل له – ورأى الجمال يشوه وكرامة الإنسان تهدر , فضاقت نفسه بالحياة , وأظهر تبرمه بها في كثير من المناسبات . ولد ” زفايج ” في نمسا وتعلم في ” فينا ” وفي عام 1938 , فر إلى انجلترا , بعد أن سئم العيش في الجو الخانق الذي أشاعه هتلر في بلاده , ورحبت به انجلترا , وألتف حوله عدد كبير من الأنصار والأصدقاء والمعجبين , ولم يلبث أن تجنس بالجنسية البريطانية . ولكنه سافر فجأة إلى برازيل ,- وكان حينذاك يكتب كتابا عن بلزاك – دون أن يدري أحد سر هذا السفر المفاجيء , ولعله ضاق بالعمل في أنجلترا أيضا , بعد أن أقضت الطائرات الألمانية مضاجع الآهلين فيها , ولم ينقض عليه عامان بالبرازيل , حتى وجد ذات يوم منتحرا في مسكنه ببلدة ” ريو دي جانيرو ” .
