About the Author: – Dr. Shahla Al-Ajili – PhD with honors in Modern Arabic Literature – Cultural Studies from Aleppo University. Professor of Literature Theory and Modern Arabic Literature at the University of Aleppo. She worked as a media officer for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in the Middle East and North Africa (IFRC) and is a trained trainer in disaster management, and has worked in several humanitarian refugee camps. Among her books are: (The Strange Mirror) Articles in Criticism of Culture, 2009, the novel (Eye of the Cat), 2006, and (Eye of the Cat) second edition, 2009 – Arab Horizons Series – Cultural Palaces Authority – Egypt, and a collection of short stories entitled (Al Mashrabiya) 2005, and “The Syrian Novel – Experience and Theoretical Categories” (study), and four joint books on identity and narratives. She has participated in many Arab and international conferences, and has many studies and research in international refereed journals.

“جاءني خاطر في تلك الجلسة أنه كان عليّ أن أدرس الجغرافيا. لقد اكتشفت معه أنني أحبها حقاً وأنها ربما كانت شغفي المغيّب الذي لم ينتبه أحد إليه، حتى أنا. وربما لهذا السبب تخصصت في مجال قريب من الجغرافيا البشرية تحديداً، وهو الأنثروبولوجيا الثقافية. لو قام ناصر بتدريسي هذه المادة في سنواتي المدرسية المبكرة، لكنت أعددت معه خرائط بديلة لهذا العالم الرديء. ولو أن بابا اشترى لي تلك الكرة الأرضية التي رأيتها في واجهة مكتبة في شارع جان دارك في منطقة الحمراء ببيروت، لكنت ذهبت باتجاه الجغرافيا بلا شك. ولكتبنا أبحاثنا معاً، أنا وناصر، حول الفخاخ السياسية التي تصنعها التضاريس مثلاً. كنت في الرابعة من عمري، ووقفت أشير إلى تلك الكرة وراء الزجاج، وقد غطّى الأزرق اللامع المخطط بخطوط الذهب جلّ مساحتها، وأصرخ: الدنيا، الدنيا، أريد الدنيا… يسحبني بابا من يدي، ويقول: سنشتري “الدنيا” من الشام، من الشام!”.
