يتناول هذا الكتاب طرح بعض القضايا المرتبطة بحياة المسلم في ظل الحضارة الغربية، ويعمل على تحديد منهجي للمفاهيم في تناول هذه القضايا. يبدأ الحديث عن مشكلة الحضارة في ظل المشاكل التي يواجهها العالم الإسلامي. ويتحدث عن الشروط الموضوعية التي تساعد شعباً ما تخلص من الاستعمار وقام بإنجاز ثورة كي يحقق الخروج من التخلف. ويتناول موضوع التخلف ضمن تحليل مشاكل العالم الإسلامي، ثم مقابلة هذا المصطلح بمصطلح آخر وهو النُّموّ. ويبدأ بتعريف المصطلح، وكيف يتحقق النُّمو في عالمنا الإسلامي استناداً إلى تجارب شعوب رفعت شعار النُّمو. ويتحدث عن التصنيع في اليابان وكيف حقق الشعب الياباني تجربته المماثلة للغرب المتقدم. ثم يتحدث عن النمو ضمن البعد الاقتصادي، ثم يتحدث عن تعريف الحضارة، والشروط الأخلاقية والمادية التي تتيح لمجتمع معين أن يقدم لكل فرد المساعدة الضرورية له في هذا الطور أو ذاك من أطوار نموِّه.
