إن الدافع الأساسي للمحاور الجيد ليس إقناع من يحاوره بوجهة نظره ، وليس جعله يقف إلى جانبه وإنما دافعه الأساسي أن يُريَ محاوره ما لا يراه أي : أن يدل محاوره على نقطة لا يراها أو خفيت عنه ، وأن يطلعه على شيء غائب عن ذهنه شيء لا يعلمه وفي الوقت نفسه وهو يحاوره ، يأمل أن يظفر هو أيضاً من محاوره بأن يكشف له عن غموض أمور لا يراها أو لا يعرفها ، إن كلا المتحاورين يطلبان العلم والوضوح ومعرفة الحق ولا شك في أن بعض الحوار قد ينقلب إلى جدل عقيم ومقيت كما أن بعض الجدل قد يتسم بالرفق والحكمة ، ومهمتنا دائماً أن نكون محاورين جيدين ومجادلين باللتي هي أحسن ودعاة إلى الحق بأحسن أسلوب ، وأرفع خلق ، وأكثر مرعاة لمن نجادلهم ونحاورهم وندعوهم .
