About the Author: Basudeb Bhatta earned a PhD in engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India. He is currently the course coordinator of the Computer Aided Design Centre, Jadavpur University. He has more than 25 years of industrial, teaching, and research experience in the domains of remote sensing, GNSS, GIS, and CAD. He has published many research papers, monographs, and textbooks on remote sensing, GIS, GNSS, and CAD. Dr. Bhatta has been instrumental in initiating a large number of courses on geoinformatics, GNSS, CAD, and related fields. He is a life member of several national and international societies. Dr. Bhatta is the Fellow of Nikhil Bharat Shissha Parishad. Dr. Bhatta has been awarded with ‘Outstanding Scientist Award’ by the VDGOOD Professional Association (in their International Scientist Awards on Engineering, Science and Medicine 2021).

This book documents research conducted on the analysis of urban growth and sprawl by using remote sensing data and GIS techniques. The research was conducted between 1980-2010 in the city of Kolkata, India. The aim of the research was to use metrics that were less demanding in terms of data and computation than normal metrics. However, it has been found that most of them were inferior in capturing insights of urban sprawl. For this book, some of these metrics have therefore been modified and new ones are proposed. The research focuses on problems associated with the analysis of urban growth by using remote sensing data from a technological perspective.
