A Visual Guide to Financial Statements: Overview for Non-Financial Managers and Investors book pdf download By Thomas Ittelson

A short and understandable introduction to financial reporting and analysis.
A company’s financial statements simply document the movement of cash and goods and services into and out of the enterprise. That is all financial statements are about. It is no more complicated. Everything else is details. Don’t sweat the details. This 48-page, full color picture book provides an overview with no gobbledygook and confusing jargon. All necessary numeric structure is explained and all essential vocabulary is defined. No prior accounting knowledge required.
Understanding financial reporting does not have to be difficult. You have learned all the math required to master financial statements by the end of the fourth grade—mostly addition and subtraction. However, you will need to learn and use specialized accounting vocabulary, which can be confusing. You will also need to understand the structure and appreciate the purpose of the three major numeric statements that describe a company’s financial condition. Each paints a different, essential picture—the “three-legged stool” of company reporting.

The Income Statement shows the manufacturing (or service offerings) and selling actions of the company that result in profit or loss during a period of time (called the “period”). The Income Statement gives a very important perspective on the company’s performance — its profitability.
The Cash Flow Statement details the movements of cash into and out of the company for the period. You need money to make money. Running out of cash is bad. Duh.
The Balance Sheet records at the end of a period, what the company owns and what it owes, including the owners’ stake called shareholders’ equity.
Financial statements are simply summaries and structured presentations of the various events (business transactions) that affect a company’s financial performance. Business transactions are anything that transfers money to or from the company, or transfers goods and services. Transactions can also record future financial obligations that the company may assume, or also rights that the company is granted from others.
If you can follow a recipe or apply for a loan, you can learn accounting. The basics are not difficult, and they are not rocket science. Just as a CPR class teaches you how to perform cardiac pulmonary resuscitation, this short book will explain how to read financial statements. It will not train you to be an accountant (just as a CPR course will not make you a cardiac doctor), but it should give you the confidence to be able to look at a set of financial statements and make sense of them.

How to Read a Financial Report: Wringing Vital Signs Out of the Numbers book pdf download By John Tracy

The book does cover the basics well, but my main problem with the book is that it is not formatted very well. Here is a list of my problems below….. 1. He shows all these complicated(for beginners) pictures first, then tells you like 20 pages later, “Oh hey don’t bother trying to understand them because I will be going over them in depth later in the book.” That is just poor teaching. 2. He also likes to go over terms and subjects without telling how they relate to anything, so your stuck with all the information with no knowledge of how to use it, then 10-15 pages later he reverts back, “Oh hey you know all that useless knowledge I went over way back when, well this is how you use it.” It would have been better if he covered terms, subjects, and usability all in one chapter and not bounce around. 3. His opening should have really been, “This is what we are going to cover, don’t worry about understanding know, i will cover more in depth later on” along with his complicated picks, then he should have had a list of terms needed in order and not splattered all over several chapters, then do the rest of the book. When I say terms I don’t mean every term in the book, what I mean is that the first 25 pages had basics terms used in all chapters, but he spent too much time talking about each one. And whenever you forgot what something meant you have to go back and search trough the 25 pages to find those basic terms. It would have been better to see them all listed out in order. Now with all that said, he did write a good book. When you read the book you come to actually like the author as a person, which probably why he is able to get away with some of the strange formatting of the the book. He also does have moments of nice clarity. Every connection chapter was done fairly well, covering just a basic concept then moving on. So he did do a couple things right, but I do think he could do a better job.

This is a great refresher course for me. I like the fact that you have to problem solve and work out the problems. Being out of accounting for quite a few years, really enlightened me again to figure out what to do. But I do still remember some of it also. So, thank you. Highly recommended, at least by me.
