يبدأ المؤلف هذا الكتاب بذكر تعريفات جديدة لكل من الاختيار والترجيح عند العلماء وعند ابن تيمية على وجه الخصوص، وهل يصح اختيار المفسر لبعض الآراء دون ترجيح لها على غيرها من الاختيارات، وأين وقعت الاختيارات تحديدا في إنتاج ابن تيمية التفسيري الغزير، ثم ينتقل المؤلف بعد ذلك لاختيارات ابن تيمية وترجيحاته في القرآن الكريم، مبتدأ بسورة الفاتحة، وأول المسائل التي اختصها ابن تيمية للاختيار والترجيح في سورة الفاتحة هي البسملة وهل تعد البسملة من القرآن الكريم أم أنها ليست آية من آي القرآن، وقد اختار ابن تيمية القول أن البسملة آية من آي القرآن الكريم، غير أنها ليست آية من آيات سورة الفاتحة، وقد دلل على هذا الاختيار ورجحه بعديد الأقوال من المنقول والمعقول وصلت هذه الأدلة المرجحة إلى أكثر من سبعة أدلة تثبت صحة اختيار وترجيح ابن تيمية في هذه المسألة.
