About the Author: Murray Seymour Klamkin was an American mathematician, known as a prolific presenter and editor of professionally difficult mathematical problems. Klamkin was born on March 5, 1921 in Brooklyn, New York. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the Cooper Union in 1942, and after four years of service in the United States Army, he earned a master’s degree from Brooklyn Polytechnic in 1947, where he taught from 1948 until 1957. Subsequently, Klamkin worked at AVCO, taught at the State University of New York at Buffalo (1962-1964), and worked as a principal research scientist at Ford Motor Company (1965-1976). During this period, he was also a visiting professor at the University of Minnesota. After leaving Ford, he became a professor at the University of Waterloo. From 1976 to 1981 Klamkin was chair of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Alberta. After 1981 he became Professor Emeritus in Alberta. Klamkin died on August 6, 2004

Five Hundred Mathematical Challenges book pdf download By Murray S. Klamkin

This book contains 500 problems that range over a wide spectrum of mathematics and of levels of difficulty. Some are simple mathematical puzzlers while others are serious problems at the Olympiad level. Students of all levels of interest and ability will be entertained by the book. For many problems, more than one solution is supplied so that students can compare the elegance and efficiency of different mathematical approaches. A special mathematical toolchest summarizes the results and techniques needed by competition-level students. Teachers will find the book useful, both for encouraging their students and for their own pleasure. Some of the problems can be used to provide a little spice in the regular curriculum by demonstrating the power of very basic techniques. The problems were first published as a series of problem booklets almost twenty years ago. They have stood the test of time and the demand for them has been steady. Their publication in book form is long overdue.

Author: Richard W. Hamming

About the Author: Richard Wesley Hamming was an American mathematician, whose work had many implications for computer and communications engineering. Some of his contributions are: Hamming’s code (or symbol) (which uses the Hamming matrix), the Hamming window, Hamming numbers, fill-sphere problems (or Hamming field), and Hamming distance. Hamming was born in Chicago on February 11, 1915, and attended the University of Chicago, the University of Nebraska, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he wrote his doctoral thesis under the supervision of Vladimir Tregetzinsky (1901-1973). In April 1945 he joined the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos Laboratory, where he programmed IBM’s mechanical calculators that calculated solving equations provided by project physicists. He left the project to join Bell Telephone Laboratories in 1946. Over the next fifteen years he was involved in nearly all of the laboratories’ notable achievements. After retiring from Bell Laboratories in 1976, Hamming took a position at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, working there as an assistant professor and senior lecturer in computer science, devoting himself to teaching and writing books. He gave his last lecture in December 1997, a few weeks before he died of a heart attack on January 7, 1998.

Art of Doing Science and Engineering: Learning to Learn book pdf download By Richard W. Hamming

Highly effective thinking is an art that engineers and scientists can be taught to develop. By presenting actual experiences and analyzing them as they are described, the author conveys the developmental thought processes employed and shows a style of thinking that leads to successful results is something that can be learned. Along with spectacular successes, the author also conveys how failures contributed to shaping the thought processes. Provides the reader with a style of thinking that will enhance a person’s ability to function as a problem-solver of complex technical issues. Consists of a collection of stories about the author’s participation in significant discoveries, relating how those discoveries came about and, most importantly, provides analysis about the thought processes and reasoning that took place as the author and his associates progressed through engineering problems.

Digital filters book pdf download By Richard W. Hamming

This introductory text examines digital filtering — the processes of refining signals— and its relevance to many applications, particularly computer-related functions. Assuming only a knowledge of calculus and some statistics, it concentrates on linear signal processing, with some consideration of roundoff effects and Kalman filters. Numerous examples and exercises.

USA mathematical olympiads, 1972-1986 book pdf download By Murray S. Klamkin

People delight in working on problems “”because they are there,”” for the sheer pleasure of meeting a challenge. This is a book full of such delights. In it, Murray S. Klamkin brings together 75 original USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) problems for yearss 1972-1986, with many improvements, extensions, related exercises, open problems, references and solutions, often showing alternative approaches. The problems are coded by subject, and solutions are arranged by subject, e.g., algebra, number theory, solid geometry, etc., as an aid to those interested in a particular field. Included is a Glossary of frequently used terms and theorems and a comprehensive bibliography with items numbered and referred to in brackets in the text. This a collection of problems and solutions of arresting ingenuity, all accessible to secondary school students. The USAMO has been taken annually by about 150 of the nation’s best high school mathematics students. This exam helps to find and encourage high school students with superior mathematical talent and creativity and is the culmination of a three-tiered competition that begins with the American High School Mathematics Examination (AHSME) taken by over 400,000 students. The eight winners of the USAMO are candidates for the US team in the International Mathematical Olympiad. Schools are encouraged to join this large and important enterprise. See page x of the preface for further information. This book includes a list of all of the top contestants in the USAMO and their schools. The problems are intriguing and the solutions elegant and informative. Students and teachers will enjoy working these challenging problems. Indeed, all those who are mathematically inclined will find many delights and pleasant challenges in this book.

About the Author: Martin Gardner (October 21, 1914 – May 22, 2010) was an American popular mathematics and popular science writer with interests also encompassing scientific skepticism, micromagic, philosophy, religion, and literature—especially the writings of Lewis Carroll, L. Frank Baum, and GK Chesterton. He was also a leading authority on Lewis Carroll. The Annotated Alice, which incorporated the text of Carroll’s two Alice books, was his most successful work and sold over a million copies. He had a lifelong interest in magic and illusion and was regarded as one of the most important magicians of the twentieth century. He was considered the doyen of American puzzlers. He was a prolific and versatile author, publishing more than 100 books. Gardner was best known for creating and sustaining interest in recreational mathematics—and by extension, mathematics in general—throughout the latter half of the 20th century, principally through his “Mathematical Games” columns. These appeared for twenty-five years in Scientific American, and his subsequent books collecting them. Gardner was one of the foremost anti-pseudoscience polemicists of the 20th century. His 1957 book Fads and Fallacies in the Name of Science became a classic and seminal work of the skeptical movement. In 1976 he joined with fellow skeptics to found CSICOP, an organization promoting scientific inquiry and the use of reason in examining extraordinary claims.

A Gardner’s workout: training the mind and entertaining the spirit book pdf download By Martin Gardner

Martin Gardner, as the Master of Mathematical Games and Puzzles, has used his personal exuberance and his fascination with puzzles and magic to entice a wide range of readers into a world of mathematical discovery. As the author of Scientific American’s “Mathematical Games” column for 25 years, he gained a large following among puzzlers, magicians, and mathematicians. In the years since then, Gardner has continued to write articles for academic journals and popular magazines. Forty-one of those pieces, never before published in book form, are collected in this volume. Truly a treat for Martin Gardner’s many fans, the articles span a wide range of topics. They include games of chance (and why a “computer” will always beat a human player), word ladders and mathematical word play games, tiling puzzles, magic squares, computer and calculator “magic” tricks, and other mathematical puzzles. Providing the tools to furnish our all-too-sluggish minds with an athletic workout, Gardner’s problems foster an agility of the mind as they entertain.
