رَغْمَ ازدِهارِ الحَياةِ العَقلِيةِ والفِكرِيةِ فِي القَرنِ الرَّابعِ الهِجرِيِّ نَتيجةَ حَرَكةِ التَّرجَمةِ النَّشِيطةِ إِلى العَربِيةِ لِكُتُبِ فَلاسِفةِ اليُونانِ القُدامَى، ومَا دَوَّنَه أُدَباءُ الفُرسِ وحُكَماءُ الهِند، فإنَّ هَذِه الحَياةَ الفِكرِيةَ البَاذِخةَ تَرافقَتْ مَعَ ضَعفٍ كَبيرٍ أَصابَ الحَياةَ السِّياسِية؛ حَيثُ تَعالَتِ النَّبَراتُ الانفِصالِيةُ الرَّافِضةُ لِسُلطانِ الخِلافةِ ببَغداد. وكانَ مِن بَينِ هَؤلاءِ الرَّافِضِينَ جَماعةٌ عَلى مَذهَبِ الشِّيعةِ الإِسماعِيلِيةِ سُميَتْ ﺑ «إخوان الصَّفا» وَضَعوا كِتابًا ضمَّ أَهَمَّ الآراءِ الفَلسَفِيةِ والعِلمِيةِ فِي ذَلكَ الوَقت، فَكانَ يُشبِهُ دَائرةَ مَعارِفَ مُتكامِلةً لا غِنَى عَنها للمُثقَّفِ العَربِيِّ وَقتَها. وقَدْ هَدَفَ مُؤلِّفُوها إلى تَغييرِ البِنْيةِ العَقلِيةِ السَّائِدةِ والمُسَيطِرةِ فِي المُجتَمعِ العَربِيِّ كبَديلٍ لِلأَنساقِ الثَّقافِيةِ التَّقلِيدِيةِ التي يُقَدِّمُها مُثقَّفُو السُّلطَة.
