رواية “موت إيفان إيليتش” رائعة الأديب الروسى “ليو تولستوى” والتى تروي قصة “إيفان إيليتش” نموذج الموظف المثالي، الجادّ في عمله والطامح إلى الارتقاء في السلّم الوظيفي، وتدور في هذه الرواية مناقشة بين “إيفان إيليتش” وطبيبه إثر سقوطه فريسة للخوف، ثم استسلامه للموت إثر مرض مجهول أصابه. وهذه المناقشة الصغيرة تشي باستسلام إيفان إيليتش أو القاضي للموت بعدما كان خائفا منه، لكن هذا الاستسلام مبعثه أولاً الحكمة لديه، حتى غَدا في كثير من خطبه يقوم بدور الواعظ الديني: «كلّ شيء مجاف للحقيقة، حتى حياتك نفسها، كذب وخداع، تحجب عنك حقيقة الحياة ووالموت». تنتهي الرواية بموت القاضي بعد عذاب ثلاثة أيام وصراخ وأنين موجعين، إذ عرّى الصورة الزائفة للحياة ولمن حوله. وهذه الرواية رغم صغر حجمها، وسردها البسيط الذي يخلو من التعقيد، إلاّ أنها تقف عند معان إنسانيّة نبيلة، فتكشف عن ضعف النفس البشرية، وتنتقد زيف الحياة الأرستقراطية، بتسليط الضوء على هشاشة النفس، وأن ثمّة في الحياة أموراً تستحق أن تمنح أو يستمتع بها، وفي المقابل الإنسان ضعيف، فتلك السقطة من فوق السّلم التي لم يشعر بتأثيرها آنئذٍ حوّلت حياته إلى جحيم، ثم كشفت له في فترة الاحتضار عن خواء ماضيه السابق.
