About the Author: Born Jerome David Salinger on January 1, 1919, he was an American writer best known for his 1951 novel The Catcher in the Rye. Prior to its publication, Salinger published several short stories in Story magazine and served in World War II. In 1948, his famous story “A Perfect Day for Bananafish” appeared in The New Yorker, which published many of his subsequent works. The Catcher in the Rye was an instant popular success.
