يبدا الغزالي بالاعتقاد ويعرفه على انه عقد القلب على صورة ما او ظن في القلب بوجود شيء يغيب عنك و العلم هو الاعتقاد الجازم الثابت المطابق للواقع. يوكد الغزالي ان المعرفة هي مادة التقرب الى الله واساسها معرفة الله باسماءه وصفاته والاعتقاد هي الصورة الله في قلبك والتي لابد ان تخلو من تعطيل والحاد وتشبيه وتجسيم ونقص وحلول واتحاد واباحة وتبني على التنزيه والتعظيم والكبرياء. وبين العلم والفكر خطوات اولها السماع واليقظة والانتباه والتذكر واخرها التفكر وهو تغذية راجعة للاعتقاد والعمل. ومنتهى العلم العمل و العمل قيده الاخلاص والاخلاص نوعين: الاول اخلاص التقرب الى الله بذلك العمل و الثاني اخلاص طلب الاجر الاخروي ومخاطره النفاق والرياء والتخليط والمن والاذى والندامة والعجب والحسرة والتهاون وخوف الملامة. والنية وسيلة ذلك لتمييز الاعمال. والصدق استواء السر بالعلانية. والعمل والعبادة لهم ثلاثة اصول: توفيق في البداية واصلاح في اثناءه والقبول في النهاية وقيد ذلك كله التقوى. والتقوى عن ثلاث: عن الشرك وعن البدع وعن المعاصي. ولابد من انتظام العمل و تحكيم الاخلاق على الدوام. الا ان العمل قد تشوبه شوائب منها شهوة عقل وهذه تحتاج قوة اعتقاد وشهوة غضب وتحتاج حكمة وشجاعة وشهوة جسد وتحتاج عفة واما خواطر من الشيطان وتحتاج معرفة لمكائده واستخفاف بها ودوام ذكر الله وقيد تلك الامور كلها هو العدل في اداء الحقوق والواجبات. والعمل انواع منها باللسان والجوارح وقيده تريض اللسان والبطن والجوارح على تقوى الله وتمرين النفس على الخير. والعمل يسري من الافراط الى التفريط ولذلك فان التواضع ضابط للأحوال ومقيدها في الوسط المحمود. والتوبة حال عند الذنب وخطواته معرفة الذنب والتوبة منه والفرار منه لاحقا والانابة كلما ارتكب, إلى ان يصبح حال النفس هو الاخبات من كثرة التوبة والانابة. فشهوات النفس وخواطر الشيطان الد اعداء الانسان وتحتاج رياضة وتمرين على فعل الخير والصبر عليه. اما اساليب الوقاية فتكمن في الخوف من الله والرجاء فيما عند الله والاشفاق وهو خوف ورجاء والخشوع وهو سكون القلب والجوارح. والخوف نوعان خوف سلب نعمة وخوف عقوبة والرجاء محفز على كثير الطاعات. والمحاسبة اهم وسائل الوقاية اذا ما لحقه اعتصام واستقامة. والشكر ثاني الوسائل والتوكل هو تفويض والتسليم والثقة. الى ان تصبح النفس راضية بقدر الله وقديم اختياره. والتحقيق هو تمييز المقامات والاحوال وتخليصها من الشوائب.
