ورواية “بوذا في العالم السفلي” (في الأصل الأمريكي) هي الرواية الثانية للكاتبة الأمريكية وقد استحسنها النقد أيضا وحازت على جائزة “فوكنر” للرواية. وتمتاز الرواية بوصفها الدقيق ولغتها السردية المكثفة، وبترفعها عن التباكي على مآل يابانيات بائسات تهاوت أحلامهن منذ أن وطأن أمريكا، مثلما تمتاز باعتمادها في سرد الأحداث على ضمير المتكلم الجمع (نحن)، وكأن الكاتبة لا تروم التعبير فقط عن تضامنها مع أولئك النسوة بوصفها امرأة، بل تتقمص مكابداتهن ومآسيهن بوصفها يابانية الأصول أيضا، أو هو إلحاح منها على حقيقتهن المغيبة منذ مطلع القرن العشرين في سجلات التاريخ الياباني والأمريكي علىى حدّ سواء. سرد لا وجود فيه لأبطال ولا ذكر لأسماء إلا ما ندر، ولا أثر لحوار إلا ما ينتأ بين السطور بشكل أحادي وبخط مغاير. سرد يمضي فيه الزمن في انسجام غير مخل ولا ممل، وتتعدد فيه الأصوات، أصوات أولئك البائسات وأزواجهن وأطفالهن، وأصوات ما نسجن في الديار الغريبة من صداقات قليلة، وما لقين فيها من أعداء كثر يحترزون من الغريب خصوصا إذا كان من ملة أخرى. والكتاب يصور متاهة المهاجرات في حلقة منسية من تاريخ اليابان الحديث، وهي كما يقول مترجمها في مقدمته المستفيضة لها: أوديسة من نوع خاص… إبحار إلى ديار بعيدة دونما أمل في العودة…. ارتحال مجموعة فتيات معدمات من أرياف اليابان وقراه المنسية بحثا عن زوج يحفظ لهن عيشا غير الذي كن يعشنه في مزارع الأرز البائسة. بنات أغلبهن عذارى يحملن صور أزواج لا يعرفنهم، وألبسة تقليدية بسيطة، وأشياء أخرى حميمة يحفظنها بين دفوف كتب من نوع “مرحبا أيتها الآنسات اليابانيات!” أو “دليل المسافر إلى أمريكا” أو “عشر طرق لإمتاع الرجل”، ويخبّئن بين الضلوع أسرارا لا يبحن بها لأحد، ورغائب ومخاوف. رغائب أنثوية بفرحة العمر، ومخاوف منح الجسد لرجل مجهول في بلد مجهول.
