About the Author: He is Ali bin Ahmed bin Muhammad Bakathir al-Kindi. He was born on the 15th of Dhu al-Hijjah 1328 AH corresponding to December 21, 1910 AD, on the island of Surabaya, Indonesia, to Yemeni parents from the Hadhramaut region. When he reached the age of ten, his father traveled with him to Hadhramaut to raise an Arab and Islamic upbringing there with his father’s brothers. He reached the city of Seiyun in Hadhramaut on Rajab 15, 1338 AH corresponding to April 5, 1920 AD. There he received his education at the Nahda Scientific School and studied Arabic and Sharia sciences at the hands of eminent sheikhs, including his uncle, the linguist and grammarian judge Muhammad bin Muhammad Bakathir. He also received religious sciences at the hands of the jurist Muhammad bin Hadi al-Saqqaf. . Bakathir’s talents appeared early, so he composed poetry when he was thirteen years old, and he taught at the Renaissance School and took over its administration when he was under twenty years old. Bakathir arrived in Egypt in 1352 AH, corresponding to 1934 AD, and joined Fouad I University (currently Cairo University), where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts, Department of English Language in 1359 AH / 1939 AD, and in 1936 AD, while studying at the university, he translated Shakespeare’s play (Romeo and Juliet) In sent poetry, and two years later – that is, in 1938 AD – he composed his play (Akhenaten and Nefertiti) with free poetry, to be the pioneer of this type of system in Arabic literature. After graduating from university, Bakathir joined the Institute of Education for Teachers and obtained a diploma in 1940, and worked as an English language teacher for fourteen years. Bakathir traveled to France in 1954 on a free scholarship. After the end of the study, he preferred to reside in Egypt, where he loved the Egyptian society and interacted with it, so he married a conservative Egyptian family, and his relationship with men of thought and literature became close, such as Al-Akkad, Tawfiq Al-Hakim, Al-Mazini, Muhib Al-Din Al-Khatib, Naguib Mahfouz, Saleh Jawdat and others. Bakathir said in an interview with Radio Aden in 1968 that he is classified as the second Arab playwright after Tawfiq al-Hakim.

يكتب الروائي جمال الغيطاني في مقدمة كتاب « توفيق الحكيم يتذكر» قائلاً: “عرفت توفيق الحكيم من إبداعه الأدبي والفكري أكثر مما عرفته على المستوى الشخصي .. معتبرًا “يوميات نائب في الأرياف'” من الدرر الثمينة في خلاصته للفن الروائي الإنساني، وهي واحدة من أجمل الروايات في أدب القرن. ويؤكد أن الحكيم كان من المتذوقين الكبار للغة، فقد اقتربت منه أكثر في سنوات السبعينات، وكثيرًا ما كنت أجده وحيدًا في مكتبه، الذي لم يغلق بابه قط، يتصور الحجرة الفسيحة، كنت أجده في حالات عميقة من التأمل، وبعد رحيل ابنه الوحيد إسماعيل كان دائم الشجن، موضحًا أنه في لحظة، قال لي يومًا: “في طفولته كان إذ يقترب منه، أطلب من أمه أن تأخذه بعيدًا عني، حتى استمر في القراءة والكتابة، وهأنذا لا أتلمس منه كلمة بالسمع ولا نظرة، حتى لقد ضيعت ما صنعت، ليتني لم أفعل”. يبدأ الفصل الأول بالكتابة عن والده واستكمل حديثه عن ميلاده قائلا: “روت والدتي أني هبطت إلى الدنيا في صمت، دون بكاء أوعويل، شأن الكثيرين من الأطفال، تحسبني نزلت ميتاً، والتفت الجميع إلى ناحية فوجدوني أنظر كما زعموا إلى ضوء المصباح، وإصبعي في، فمن شان المتعجب إياله من زعم!”. ويسترسل في الحديث: “كان لا بد للمضي في المرحلة الثانوية، من إقامتي في الإسكندرية، واضطرت الأسرة بالفعل إلى إعداد منزل برمل الإسكندرية لهذا الغرض، وعولت على أن اجتهد من أول العام، لا أكون على الأقل من المتفوقين، وبدأت أتفوق بالفعل، ومضت أسابيع هذا الاجتهاد، وإذا بإعلان السينماتوغراف يلوح لي عن بعد كأنه شيطان، ولم أستطع مقاومة الإغراء، ودخلت الحفلة السينمائية في الساعة السادسة، والتي انتهت في التاسعة، فما أن وصلت إلى المنزل، وفتحت لي والدتي شراعة الباب، وسألتن أين كنت؟، حاولت الإنكار، وهو لم يسعني إلا الاعتراف بالحقيقة، فقالت: “امكث في الشارع إلى أن يأتي أبوك، ويتصرف في أمرك”. ويشكو الحكيم تغير أحوال الحياة والثقافة “زمان.. موضحًا أن الرواية الجيدة كانت تظهر فتهز الواقع الأدبي، على عكس ما يحدث الآن، فكل عمل يظهر هناك في حاجة إلى مقدمة وإلى خطة للدعاية. ويتمسك توفيق الحكيم بمسرحيته “شهرزاد”، التي ترجمت إلى الإنجليزية، قائلا: “لم أسع في “شهرزاد” إلى تصوير الإطار الخارجي المبهر، الذي كان يمكن أن استوصيه من ألف ليلة وليلة، لم أحول تقديم الرقصات والجو الشرقي”.

About the Author: Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) was an Austrian writer of Jewish descent. كان تسفايغ شاعراً وفيلسوفاً ومؤرخاً وروائياً، جمعته علاقات صداقة مع كبار معاصريه ومنهم فرويد ودالي، وهو هنا يؤرخ لعصره في مذكرات حية ذكية، صريحة، وكأنها أهم رواياته.. لم يحظَ الأديب النمساوي ستيفان تسفايج، المولود في فيينا عام 1881 م، بحياة مستقرة آمنة، فالحياة التي بدت في بدايات الطفولة والصبا رخية، هادئة سرعان ما كشفت عن أنيابها الحادة لصبي غر يتلمس أول الطريق في عالم الكتابة؛ والإبداع؛ والفن. إن السنوات الأخيرة من القرن التاسع عشر وبدايات القرن العشرين شهدت استقرارا في القارة الأوربية. لكن وتيرة الأزمات بدأت مع نشوب الحرب العالمية الأولى (1914 ـ 1918) لتؤذن بدخول هذه القارة الهانئة مرحلة من الصراعات القاتلة. صعود النازية في ألمانيا، والفاشية في إيطاليا. اشتعال الحرب الأهلية في أسبانيا. ومع نهاية الثلاثينيات ساد الخواء الثقافي، والانهيار الاقتصادي وتكلل ذلك بنشوب الحرب الكونية الثانية (1939 ـ 1945) التي لم يرَ تسفايج نهايتها لإقدامه على الانتحار في مدينة بتروبولس البرازيلية في 23 شباط 1942م. هذا الانتحار جاء تعبيرا عن الاحتجاج على ما أصاب القارة الأوربية من جنون أشعل حروبا طاحنة حصدت أرواح الملايين. لم يجد الكاتب بديلا سوى الرحيل بعد أن استنزفت طاقاته “أعوام التشرد المديدة”. لكنه تمنى لأصدقائه حياة أجمل، إذ كتب في رسالة مقتضبة، قبيل الانتحار: “عسى أن تتسنى لهم رؤية الفجر بعد هذا الليل الطويل! وها أنذا أتقدمهم وقد فرغ صبري تماما”. هذه الحياة الدراماتيكية التي توزعت بين المنافي، والتي انطوت على مفارقات مريرة، هي محور مذكرات تسفايج “عالم الأمس” التي صدرت ترجمتها العربية مؤخرا عن دار المدى بدمشق بتوقيع عارف حديفة.
