About the Author: Mustafa bin Hosni al-Sibai is the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood movement in Syria. He was born in the city of Homs in Syria in 1915. He grew up in an ancient scientific family known for science and scholars for hundreds of years. His father and grandfathers took up the rhetoric in the Great Mosque of Homs, generation after generation. He was influenced by his father, Sheikh Hosni. Al-Sibai, who had well-known stances against the French colonizer, went in 1933 to Egypt to study at Al-Azhar, and there in 1941 he participated in the demonstrations against the British occupation. Three months later, he was transferred to Sarafand detention center in Palestine, where he remained for four months, then he was released on bail. During his studies in Egypt, al-Sibai met the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, Hassan al-Banna, and the relationship between them remained after his return to Syria, where scholars, preachers and men of Islamic societies met in the Syrian governorates and decided to unite their ranks and work as one group, and thus the Muslim Brotherhood was established from them for the whole of the Syrian country. This meeting was attended by Said Ramadan from Egypt, and that was in 1942, then three years later in 1945, Mustafa al-Sibai was chosen to be the first general observer of the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria. In Homs against French policy, he was arrested again by the French as well because of the sermons he was giving against French policy and the French occupation. He also participated in the Palestine War in 1948, where he led the Syrian battalion in 1947. He established the newspaper (Al-Manar) until it was suspended by Hosni al-Zaim after the military coup in 1949. In 1955, he founded, with others, the weekly (Al-Shehab) magazine, which continued to be published until the establishment of the union with Egypt in 1958 in the same year, i.e. 1955. It stopped in Egypt and continued to be published in Damascus until 1958, when it moved to its owner Saeed Ramadan in Geneva, Switzerland. Al-Sibai issued in its place the monthly “Civilization of Islam” magazine. Al-Sibai remained based on this magazine until he died, where it was issued by Muhammad Adib Al-Saleh in Damascus, and Al-Sibai was also elected as a deputy On behalf of Damascus in the Constituent Assembly in 1949, then he was elected Vice-President of the Council, and a member of the Constitution Committee consisting of 9 members. In 1950, he was appointed as a professor at the Faculty of Law at the Syrian University.

Masters in Islamic sciences majoring in Islamic philosophy – College of Dar Al Uloom – Cairo University in 1970 and a BA in Arabic language and Islamic sciences – College of Dar Al Uloom – Cairo University 1965 AD. He investigated the most prominent figures of the modern Islamic intellectual awakening, Jamal al-Din al-Afghani, Muhammad Abdo, and Abd al-Rahman al-Kawakibi, and authored books and studies on the flags of Islamic renewal, such as: Dr. Qutb, Hassan Al-Banna, and among the prominent companions of the Prophet, Ali bin Abi Talib. He also wrote about the currents of ancient and modern Islamic thought and about heritage figures such as Ghaylan Al-Dimashqi, and Al-Hasan Al-Basri. Among his last writings on modern thought: Religious Discourse between Islamic Renewal and American Change, and the West and Islam Where is the error… and where is the truth? And articles of religious and non-religious extremism, Islamic law and Western secularism, the book Our Future between Islamic Renewal and Western Modernity, the crisis of modern Islamic thought, intellectual creativity and cultural privacy, and many others. He has contributed to many specialized intellectual periodicals, participated in many seminars and scientific conferences, and was a member of a number of intellectual and research institutions, including the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and the Higher Institute of Islamic Thought. The writings and research of Dr. Emara, which enriched the Arab library, which amounted to (200) authors, were characterized by innovative and revival points of view, and to contribute to intellectual problems, and to try to present a civilized renaissance project for the Arab and Islamic nation in the stage in which it lives. He received many awards, honors, certificates of appreciation and shields, including the Friends of the Book Association award in Lebanon in 1972, the State Encouragement Award in Egypt in 1976, and the Order of the Islamic Intellectual Trend, the Founding Leader in 1998.

إنها ثنائية مخيفة ومرعبة في عالمنا اليوم .. أن تقول السياسة ؛ فهي في أبسط تعريفاتها فن الممكن وكل ما هو ممكن فلابد من الوصول إليه وبأي طريقة . وكثيرا ما ينتفي العنصر الأخلاقي في السياسة .. وأن تقول الدين ؛ فقد صوره نفر من الناس على أنه يضع أحكاما ساذجة تسفك دم الآخر وتلزم المرأة بالحجاب وتحرم التلفاز . وربما تحرم أشياء أخرى لا تدل إلا على قلة فقه وبصيرة هؤلاء. لقد حصل ارتكاس وتقزيم لعلاقة الدين بالسياسة ، فالدين علاقته بالسياسة علاقة رعاية وهداية ونصح وليست قهرا أو خدمة أو تلميعا لوجه من لا يستحق . ترى ما هي علاقة الدين بالسياسة حسب رأي المفكر الكبير الدكتور محمد عمارة ؟ وهل في الإسلام تعددية سياسية ؟ وهل يقر الإسلام بالملل المختلفة والتعايش السلمي بينها ؟ وهل وعى الإسلاميون تلك المقولة الرائعة للداعية الإسلامي الشيخ معاذ الخطيب والتي مفادها (نفضل أن يصل الإيمان إلى أصحاب الكراسي)؟ وهل وعت مجتمعاتنا العربية أن فسح المجال لعمل الإسلام السياسي في ضوء خير من أن يعمل في الظلام . وأن ألوان الطيف الفكرية المتعددة تهب أمنا حقيقيا للمجتمع في ظل تداول سلمي وحر للأفكار والسلطة ؟!! إن تصريحات الدكتور رفعت السعيد بشأن الإسلام السياسي تمثل غلوا وتطرفا نأمل منه أن يعاود مراجعة نفسه ومنطلقاته الفكرية . فلا سلامة لمجتمع يريد بعض أبنائه حجب الضوء وامتلاك الحقيقة وكتمانها عن الآخرين . والمثقف الذي لا يسعى لرأب الصدع وجمع الكلمة والدفاع عن الحريات العامة هو مثقف من الدرجة الثالثة . وربما – في أحسن الأحوال – سيفقد مصداقيته واستقلاليته فقط .
