يقول محمد حسنين هيكل في مقدمة كتابه “خريف الغضب” بأن فكرة هذا الكتاب بدأت منذ اللحظة الأولى لاعتقاله في 3 أيلول/سبتمبر 1981، حين التفت وراءه ورأى حوله في السجن كل هؤلاء الذين يمثلون الرموز الحية لأهم التيارات السياسية والفكرية المؤثرة في مصر، لقد تحقق ساعتها أن المقامر الكبير قد قام بآخر لعبة كبرى، وجازف بأوراقه كلها مرة واحدة. ولقد كان مقتنعاً بشكل شبه وجداني، أنه يعيش في دراما سوف تصل إلى نهايتها في يوم من الأيام وبشكل من الأشكال، وأنه كصحفي قد يكون مطالباً برواية قصتها قبل غيره. والكتاب في فكرته لا يمثل هجوماً على السادات، أو سيرة لحياة السادات، ولو أن فيه بعض عناصر مثل هذه السيرة، حيث قصر هيكل ذلك على بعض النواحي الضرورية لإلقاء الضوء على شخصيته وعلى بواعث حركته. والكتاب أيضاً ليس دراسة عن الأوضاع الاقتصادية والاجتماعية لمصر اليوم، ولا عن الخصائص التاريخية لمصر، ولو أن هيكل أيضاً لمس، بالضرورة بعض جوانب هذه الموضوعات، وأيضاً وأيضاً الكتاب ليس كتاباً عن الأصولية الإسلامية، ولا عن الكنيسة القبطية، ولا عن الإرهاب كسلاح سياسي، رغم أن عددا من هذه القضايا كان ضرورياً تناوله في صفحاته، والحقيقة أن محمد حسنين هيكل تناول من هذا كله ما كان لازماً لكي يقود الحديث إلى نقطة معينة من الزمان والمكان… نقطة معينة من الزمان: الساعة الثانية عشرة وعشر دقائق بعد ظهر اليوم الثلاثاء 6 تشرين الأول/أكتوبر 1981، ونقطة معينة في المكان: المنصة الرئيسية في ساحة الاستعراضات العسكرية بمدينة مصر حيث دوّت الطلقات التي أنهت حياة الرئيس محمد أنور السادات رئيس جمهورية مصر العربية، بالإضافة إلى كل ذلك ضم الكتاب رسالة توفيق الحكيم إلى هيكل، بعد صدور كتابه “خريف الغضب” والتي رفضت الأهرام نشرها، ومن ثم رد هيكل عليها.

لا أعرف أهو تحيز لرجل لما ألف و عرف، أو انه حكم فى الموضوع، بصرف النظر عن متغيرات العصور. لكنى على شبه اقتناع بأن الكتاب المطبوع على ورق له العمر الطويل، و أنه الحاضر على الدوام، مهما اشتد من حوله الزحام. بمعنى ان الكلمة المكتوبة على الورق باقية، و الكلمة المسموعة على الإذاعة و التليفزيون عابرة، و الكلمة المكهربة على الكمبيوتر فوارة، و هى مثل كل فوران متلاشية. أى أن الكلمة المكتوبة على الورق بناء صلب: حجر أو معدن، و هكذا كل بناء، و أما غيرها فهو صحيحة متغيرة – خاطفة، و لامعة وبارقة. و بالنسبة لكاتب – على ورق و بالحبر – فإن كتابته هى بناء عمره، و هكذا فإن كل المجموعة فى نهاية المطاف: عمر من الكاتب!

يحتوي هذا الكتاب على أربعة مجموعات من الأحاديث كان المحلل السياسي “محمد حسنين هيكل” قد كتبها في الفترة ما بين بدايات سنة 1976 وبدايات سنة 1977، وهي ليست كل ما كتب في هذه الفترة وإنما هي مجرد نماذج منه أراد الكاتب جمعها بين دفتي كتاب لتكون ملفاً مختصراً يحتوي على وجهة نظره في تحليل الأمور الراهنة، وفي نقد سياسة الولايات المتحدة الأميركية، وفي تحذير الطرف العربي من أهداف زعماء هذه السياسة، أو حتى لفت نظر الزعماء العرب إلى ما تريد الولايات المتحدة تحقيقه في الشرق الأوسط خصوصاً العالم العربي عموماً. في المجموعة الأولى والتي حوت على أربعة مقالات بعنوان “إلى أين من هنا؟” حاول الكاتب تحليل أزمة الشرق الأوسط، مستقرءاً مستقبل هذه الأزمة والعوامل المؤثرة من أحداث الغد، أما المجموعة الثانية فضمنها مقالتين تحدث فيهما عن الرئيس الجديد من ذلك الحين للولايات المتحدة الأميركية”. “جيمي كارتر” مفصلاً أولوياته، ونظريته للشرق الأوسط وآراءه في سياسة زعماء دولها، وضمن المجموعة الثالثة سن مقالات عن “عالم بغير كيسنجر” في محاولة منه لدراسة أسلوب هنري كيسنجري في إدارة الأزمات الدولية مع تركيز خاص على إدارته لأزمة الشرق الأوسط، وخصص المجموعة الرابعة والأخير عن المقالات للحديث عن “الموقف التفاوضي العربي”.

لا اعرف أهو تحيز رجل لما ألف وعرف أو أنه حكم فى الموضوع بصرف النظر عن متغيرات العصور. لكنى على شبه اقتناع بأن الكتاب المطبوع على ورق له العمر الطويل وأنه الحاضر على الدوام مهما اشتد من حوله الزحام. بمعنى أن الكلمة المكتوبة على الورق باقية والكلمة المسموعة على الاذاعة والتليفزيون عابرة والكلمة المكهربة على الكمبيوتر فوارة وهى مثل كل فوران متلاشية. أى أن الكلمة المكتوبة على الورق بناء صلب حجر أو معدن وهكذا كل بناء وأما غيرها فهو صيحة متغيرة خاطفة ولامعة وبارقة. وبالنسبة لكاتب على الورق وبا الحبر فان كتابته هى بناء عمره وهكذا فان هذه المجموعة فى النهاية المطاف عمر من الكتب.
