About the Author: Ahmed Hammad Al-Husseini: He is one of the first generations of zoology and comparative anatomy in Egypt. Ahmed Hammad Al-Husseini was born in the Assiut Governorate in 1912. From the beginning of his scientific career, he devoted most of his time and attention to zoology; He obtained a master’s degree from the Faculty of Science, Cairo University, and a doctorate degree from the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom, and continued to advance in his academic life until he took over the head of the animal department at the Faculty of Science, Ain Shams University. The doctor has many books, including: “Marine Mammals of Egypt”, “Birds of Egypt”, and “General Zoology”; Among his translations are: “Science in Our Daily Lives” by Montgomery, and “Life Since It Was” by Parker, among others. The College of Science named one of its stands in honor of his scientific gift. Despite the death of Dr. “Al-Husseini” in 1964 AD, his scientific contributions still constitute an essential reference for the specialist and the ordinary reader.

تختلِفُ الثديياتُ البحريةُ عن الأسماك، وهذا المؤلَّفٌ يبدأُ في مقدمتِه بالتعريفِ بالثديياتِ البحرية، ثم يتوسَّعُ في أبوابِه الثلاثةِ في دراستِها. تَتباينُ الثديياتُ البحريةُ في أنواعِها وأحجامِها، وتنتمي تلك الكائناتُ إلى ثلاثِ فصائل؛ أوَّلُها الفصيلةُ الحوتية، وتندرجُ تحتَها الحيتان والدلافين. وأمَّا الفصيلةُ الثانيةُ فهي فصيلةُ عرائسِ البحر، وهي من أشهَرِ الفصائلِ التي نُسجَتْ حولَها الحكاياتُ والأساطير، مِثلَ أسطورةِ «عروس البحر» التي تقومُ على تصوُّرِ كائنٍ نِصفُه العُلويُّ امرأةٌ ونِصفُه السُّفليُّ سمكة، وقد بيَّنَ الكاتبُ حقيقةَ هذا الكائنِ مُستعينًا بالصُّورِ التوضيحية. وتأتي سِباعُ البحرِ والفُقَمُ لتمثِّلَ الفصيلةَ الثالثة، التي تقعُ ضمنَ رُتبةِ آكلاتِ اللحومِ التي منها القططُ والكلابُ والدِّببةُ بأنواعِها.
