About the Author: Colin Henry Wilson (26 June 1931 – 5 December 2013) was an English writer, philosopher and novelist. He also wrote widely on true crime, mysticism and the paranormal, eventually writing more than a hundred books. Wilson called his philosophy “new existentialism” or “phenomenological existentialism”, and maintained his life work was “that of a philosopher, and purpose to create a new and optimistic existentialism”.
Wilson was born on 26 June 1931 in Leicester, the first child of Arthur and Annetta Wilson. His father worked in a shoe factory At the age of eleven he attended Gateway Secondary Technical School, where his interest in science began to blossom. By the age of 14 he had compiled a multi-volume work of essays covering many aspects of science entitled A Manual of General Science. But by the time he left school at sixteen, his interests were already switching to literature. His discovery of George Bernard Shaw’s work, particularly Man and Superman, was a landmark. He started to write stories, plays, and essays in earnest – a long “sequel” to Man and Superman made him consider himself to be ‘Shaw’s natural successor.’ After two unfulfilling jobs – one as a laboratory assistant at his old school – he drifted into the Civil Service, but found little to occupy his time.

منذ فترة، هيمنت حشرات ضخمة على الأرض، وحكمتها عناكب سامة، تتمتع بقدرة هائلة على التخاطر، ربت البشر لالتهامهم. واشتهر “شيب” سيد العناكب بحجمه الضخم، وبعيونه المليئة، وبأنه خالد لا يموت. قطن البشر القليلون، الذين بقوا أحراراً، في كهوف تحت الأرض في الصحراء، وتعرضوا دوماً لهجمات عناكب الموت، التي تطير داخل مناطير في الحرب، وتمشط قوة إرادتها الصحراء، مثل كشافات. كان نيال وأسرته يعيشون في حجر تحت الأرض، سكنته من قبل خنفساء غريبة. استمع نيال من جده “جومار” إلى قصص تلك الأيام، التي كان فيها البشر سادة الأرض، لكنه وجد من الصعب تصديقها. كما استمع إلى قصص عن مدينة “ديز” الكائنة تحت الأرض، التي تعد أكبر مستطونة “للبشر الأحرار”، وعن الدلتا الكبرى، وهي منطقة غابات تنمو فيها نباتات آكلة البشر، وحشرات قاتلة. حين قتل اثنان من أفراد الأسرة، انطلق نيال وأبوه إلى مدينة ديرا الكائنة تحت الأرض، واجتازا الصحراء، وبرفقتهما الحسناء انجيلي، التي ترحلت، ليعيداها إلى ذويها. وفوق الهضبة الكبرى، اتخذوا من أطلال قلعة هائلة ملجأ لهم. وبدأ نيال، للمرة الأولى، يعتقد أن البشر حكموا في يوم من الأيام الأرض. ضمن هذه المناخات تدور أحداث كولن ولسن التي فيها من الخيال الكثير، ولربما من الواقع أكثر. لأن في رمزياته ما يحيل السرديات إلى عالم الواقع عالم البشر الذي تمثل وتشابه بصدق مع عالم العناكب.
