ثمة علاقة بين الهاتف الجوال والجحيم الأبدي. في الأول من أكتوبر,كان كل شيء يسير في مجراه الطبيعي, لسماء صافية و الأسهم في البورصه لا تزال مستقره و معظم الرحلات الجوية تصل في موعدها المحدد و كلايتون (كلاي) الرسام الذي جاء من مدينة (مين) أوشك على اجتياز شارع بويلستون في مدينة بوسطن, و الذي كان عقد لتوه اتفاقاً لتنفيذ رسومات كتب هزلية مصورة, و هو ماقد يمكنه في النهاية من دعم اسرته مادياً من خلال امتهان العمل في الرسم بدلاً من التدريس, و كان بالفعل قد اشترى هديه صغيرة باهظة الثمن لزوجته شارون و كان يعلم ما سيحضره لابنه جوني. لماذا لا يكافيء نفسه بشيء صغير هو الاخر؟ان كلاي يشعر بالتفاؤل حيال مستقبله..و لكن كل هذا يتغير بغته و بسرعة شديدة..و سبب هذا التغير هو ظاهرة ستعرف فيما بعد بأسم النبضة..و ما تسبب في تلك الظاهرة هو الهاتف الجوال..ليس هاتفاً جولاً واحداً بل جميع الهواتف الجوالة..و يجد كلاي نفسه فجأه هو ورفاقة من القله النجاين قد دخلوا في حضارة العصور المظلمة..تحيطهم الاشلاء و الفوضى..و حشد من البشر عادوا الى طبيعتهم الاولية الوحشية,و بعد ذلك بدأوا في التطور. ليس هناك مخرج من هذا الكابوس, و لكن بالنسبه لكلاي كان هناك مايدفعه دوماً للعودة الى بلدته (مين). و بينما كان هو ورفاقه من اللاجئين من يقومون برحلتهم المفزعه نحو الشمال, بدأو في رؤية علامات تؤكد وجهتهم: كاشواك=لا.هاتف..ربما يكون هذا وعيداً او تهديداً..
