About the Author: Adar Nafisi (born 1947) is an Iranian writer, professor at Johns Hopkins University. She holds a fellowship from Oxford University and worked in Iran as a professor of English literature at the University of Tehran, the Islamic Open University and Allameh Tabatabai University. She was expelled from the University of Tehran because of her refusal to wear the headscarf. She left Iran for the United States in 1997. قبل بضع سنوات خلت كنتُ في (سياتل) لغرض توقيع نسخ من كتبي في مخزن كتب مستقل ومذهل يُدعى (إليوت بي) حين لاحظتُ شاباً يقف بالقرب من الطاولة؛ كان يراقبني. وعندما تضاءل الطابور، خاطبني أخيراً. قال إن كان ماراً في (سياتل)، بغية زيارة أحد أصدقائه وكان يريد مني أن أعرف أنه عاش في طهران حتى وقت قريب. قال لي: “حديثك عن كتبكِ لا جدوى منه. هؤلاء القوم لا يشبهوننا -إنهم من عالمٍ آخر. إنهم لا يأبهون بالكتب، وما إلى ذلك. هنا الوضع يختلف عما هو عليه في إيران، حين كنا مجانين بما يكفي بحيث كنا نستنسخ مئات الصفحات من كُتب من مثل (مدام بووفاري) و(وداعاً للسلاح)”.
