صارت تمشي كل صباح بخطا رتيبة بطيئة متأملة بعينين جامدتين ذاهلتين صور الشهداء القتلى.. كل يوم المزيد والمزيد من الشهداء، يصيبها القتل بالانبهار، لكنه انبهار من نوع خاص. وبدأت فكرة الانتحار تتسلل كاللص إلى عقلها، كما لو أنها من إفرازات الموت لشبان سوريا، كما لو أنهم يدعونها لتشاركهم مصيرهم، كما لو أنهم يقولون لها: لماذا أنت حية ونحن متنا، والأجدر أن يموت الكبار وتتفتح براعم الصبا؟. لم تفكر يوما بالانتحار، وكانت تتعجب كيف تسللت تلك الفكرة إلى رأسها وأخذت تتمدد مستعمرة خلايا دماغها، حتى ملامحها تغيرت، إذ أصبحت متجهمة بعد أن كان اللجميع يمتدح وجهها الصبوح وابتسامتها المشعة من قلبها. لم تعرف كيف ستؤثر بها الحرب والقتل، لكنها كانت مستسلمة ومذعورة في الوقت نفسه، وأكثر ما كان يقلقها ويخيفها إدراكها أو حدسها أنها لم تعد تملك الإرادة الكافية للصمود في وجه الآثار المدمرة للحرب، سيان عندها النظام أم المعارضة، لا تشعر أن أحدًا منهما يمثلها أو يمثل الشعب السوري، صارت فجأة تعاني من نوب عاصفة من البكاء، وتنبهر من قدرة غدتها الدمعية على ذرف الدموع.
