يَمتلكُ السيدُ «كيف» العَجُوز، صاحبُ مَتْجرِ التُّحفِ في لندن، بيضةً بَلُّورية، لكنَّها ليسَتْ بَلُّورةً عادية؛ وإنَّما بَلُّورةٌ يُمكِنُه بواسطتِها أنْ يَفتحَ نافذةً على كوكبِ المريخِ لِيرى عوالمَ ومخلوقاتٍ غريبةً لَمْ يَرَها أحدٌ مِن قبل. لا يَدري أحدٌ تحديدًا كيفَ أصبحَتِ البَلُّورةُ في حَوْزةِ السيدِ «كيف» الذي يَرفضُ بَيعَها بأيِّ ثَمن. اعتادَ السيدُ «كيف» مُشاهَدةَ العوالمِ التي تَكشفُ عَنْها البَلُّورةُ ليلًا، وأصبَحَ مُقتنِعًا أنَّ ثَمَّةَ بيضاتٍ بَلُّوريةً أخرى أرسَلَها المَريخيُّونَ إلى الأرضِ لمُراقَبةِ عالَمِنا عَنْ قُرْب.
