تحكي هذه الرواية سيرةَ لسان الدين ابن الخطيب، شهيدِ المحبّةِ وصريعِ الروح الذي يُعتبر مع صديقه ابن خلدون أعظمَ رجلينَ أنجبهما القرن 8 هـ. م/ 14 م في الغرب الإسلامي.وقد كان لابن الخطيب الفضل في إبعاد خطر حملات الاسترداد من قشتالة والممالك النصرانيّة، وبلغ أوج قمّته العلميّة والأدبيّة والسياسيّة، وملأ قصر الحمراء بأشعاره وأخباره، فتكالب عليه الأعداء، وفي مقدّمتهم أولئك الذين أحسن إليهم مثل تلميذه الخائن ابن زمرك, فأفسدوا ما بينه وبين سلطان مملكة غرناطة. ولمّا رأى تَغَيُّرَ الأحوال، اضطرَّ إلى الهرب، لكنَّ أعداءه وجّهوا له زورًا عدّة تُهَم، منها تهمة الزندقة، فَحاكموه، وسُجِنَ وعُذِّبَ. ثم قتلوه خنقًا في سجنه وأخرجوا جثّته وأحرقوها.
