(كانت لا تشبه أي امرأة أخرى رأيتها في حياتي، كانت أنثى مثل أنثى أي حيوان، ثمة شيء فيها حاد وموجع مثل حد السيف).. زفت “قطنة” كان صوف خروف أبيض مبقع بدم بكارتها معلقاً على عمود خيمة عرسها، و”طراد” في قلبها. في ليلة دخلتها عوت الذئاب وجاوبتها الكلاب، وعرفت “قطنة” أن الحرب قادمة. وعقب زفافها بأيام عثر العبد الذي يعد القهوة على حية ميتة ممددة في وسط البيت، وحرزت “قطنة” بأن خسارة كبيرة ستنال مال زوجها. في تلك الليلة بالذات، أغار “طراد الزين” على ظهر فرسه الشهير “رفعة” مع خيالته من “بني صخر” على عشيرة الشيخ “سطام” زوج “قطنة” وخلف القتلى وراءه، وساق الكثير من إبلهم وهو يصيح: “منشان عيون قطنة” ونشبت الحرب بين القبيلتين. في تلك الليلة فجراً صاحت الثعالت مثل بنات آوي، وعرفت “قطنة” أن المناحات قادمة لا محال.
