About the Author: A Lebanese thinker, writer, novelist, historian, traveller, and cartoonist. He is considered one of the greatest advocates of social reform and giants of thought in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in the Arab world. He was called “Al-Rihani” due to the large number of basil trees surrounding his house. Al-Rihani wrote in many literary genres, such as poetry, novels, articles, theatre, biographies, travels, and criticism. He also wrote in many other fields of knowledge, such as philosophy, history, economics, sociology, geography, and practiced drawing and acting. Al-Rihani had a history of struggle in which he spared no effort in employing his encyclopedic knowledge against the French occupation and striving for Lebanon’s independence. He remained on his path of knowledge and struggle until God passed away in 1940 AD, after he left a huge literary and scientific legacy.

«اذْكُرْني فِي صَلاتِكَ وسَأَذكُرُكَ فِي صَلَاتي.» رِسالةٌ هَذا مُؤَدَّاها، يَتلَقَّاها كاهِنٌ مِن رَجُلٍ يَبغُضُ الكَهَنةَ ورِجالَ الكَهَنُوت؛ رَجُلٍ مِهْنتُه الخاصَّةُ هِي غَيرُ الفِلاحةِ والزِّرَاعة، هُوَ مِن تِلكَ الطَّبَقةِ الَّتي يَحْتقِرُها النَّاس، بالرَّغْمِ مِن أنَّ البِلادَ لا تَستغنِي عَنْها؛ هُوَ أَحدُ المُكَارِينَ الَّذِينَ يَقضُونَ فِي الفَلاةِ مُعْظمَ أَوْقاتِهم، وفِي خِدْمةِ اللبنانيِّينَ يَجِدُّونَ وَراءَ البِغَال. أَحدَثَتْ تِلكَ الرِّسالةُ فِي نَفْسِ الكاهِنِ زِلْزالًا، وأَضْرمَتْ فِي عَقْلِه نِيرانَ الصِّراع، وحوَّلَتْه مِن خادِمٍ لِلأكليروس إِلى خادِمٍ لِلإِنْسان. فِي هذِهِ الرِّوايةِ القَصِيرةِ يُعالِجُ «أمين الريحاني» فِي إِطارٍ سَرْديٍّ دِرامِيٍّ وَضْعًا مِنَ الأَوْضاعِ الاجْتِماعيَّةِ الَّتِي سادَتْ بَعْضَ البَلْداتِ الشَّاميَّةِ فِي مَطْلعِ القَرْنِ العِشْرِين، حَيثُ يَنغلِقُ الجَبلُ عَلى نَفْسِه مِن جِهة، ومِن جِهةٍ أُخْرى يَنقسِمُ عَلى نفْسِه إِلى كَهَنةٍ يَدَّعُونَ الفَضِيلةَ وخِدْمةَ الرَّبِّ والرَّعِيَّة، وعامَّةٍ مِنَ الفُقَراءِ يَزدادُونَ فَقْرًا، وأَفْقرُهم المُكَارُونَ الَّذِينَ هُم بالإِضَافةِ إِلى فَقْرِهم مَحَلُّ احْتِقار. أمَّا المُكَارِي بَطلُ رِوايَتِنا فَلَه شَأْنٌ آخَر، فهُوَ وإِنْ كانَ فَقِيرًا حَقِيرًا إلَّا أنَّ لَه وَعْيًا مُغايِرًا، نَتعرَّفُ عَلَيْه بَينَ دَفَّتَيِ الكِتاب، ونَعرِفُ كَيفَ سيَخترِقُ بوَعْيِه وَعْيَ كاهِنِ قَرْيتِه.
