حلَّ «الأب براون» وصديقه المفتش «جرينوود» نزيلَينِ بأحد الفنادق، واضطرَّا إلى الانتظار في حانة الفندق برفقة بعض النزلاء والزبائن الآخرين إلى حين الانتهاء من تجهيز الغرف. نشبت مشادَّةٌ خفيفة بين القسِّ «برايس-جونز» — الخطيب الداعي إلى حظر المُسكِرات — وبعض المندوبين التجاريين المتجوِّلين؛ بسبب طلبِ القسِّ كأسًا من اللبن من ساقي الحانة. ثم دبَّ شجار عنيف بين الإمام المسلم «أكبر» والسيد «راجلي» المتذمِّر — الذي طلب كأسًا من براندي الكرز — كاد ينتهي بمقتل السيد «راجلي»، لكنهما تصالحا في النهاية. وبعدما انفضَّ الجمع، لفتَت انتباهَ «الأب براون» كأسٌ مجهولة تفوح منها رائحة الويسكي على نَضَدِ الحانة بجوار كأس اللبن. وفي فجر اليوم التالي، عثر «الأب براون» على جثة السيد «راجلي» مكوَّمةً في أحد أركان الحانة ومغروسًا في قلبه خنجر. ثم تبيَّن أن صاحب هذه الكأس المجهولة تجرَّع الويسكي سريعًا وخرج فورًا من الحانة؛ وحينئذٍ، أخبر «الأب براون» صديقَه المفتش بأنه يرغب بشدةٍ في الإمساك بذلك «السريع». فمَن هو يا تُرى؟ ولماذا يريده «الأب براون» إلى هذه الدرجة؟ وهل الشخص الذي طعن القتيل هو القاتل حقًّا؟ هذا ما سنعرفه من خلال أحداث هذه القصة الشائقة.‎
