About the Author: He is a journalist, scientist and poet. He was born in Sidon, Lebanon, and studied pharmacy at the “Syrian Protestant College” (later the American University of Beirut) and then immigrated to Egypt and settled there. He worked in the press and edited in Al-Ahram newspaper and others. He traveled to New York in 1907 and co-authored the university edition with Farah Antoine. He returned to Cairo and participated with his wife, Rose Antoine Haddad, in publishing the Ladies and Gents magazine, which has been publishing for twelve years. Editor-in-chief of Al-Muqtafa (1949-1950), and he is the author of a large number of books, most notably “Sociology” and “The Geometry of the Universe According to the Law of Relativity”. He has a large collection of novels and plays between the author and the translator. He promoted his ideas through the two publications, Al-Muqtafa and Al-Hilal, which were established respectively in 1876 and 1892. Nicolas Haddad has been described as “one of the pioneers of the Arab Renaissance”.

يُعَدُّ هذا الكتابُ واحدًا مِنَ المُؤلَّفاتِ المُتقدِّمةِ في مجالِ التنميةِ البشرية؛ ذلك أنه نُشِرَ قبلَ عُقودٍ مِن تَبَلْوُرِ ذلك العِلم. ويَقعُ «مناهج الحياة» ضِمنَ ثُلاثيةٍ وَضعَها مُؤلِّفُها تحتَ عُنوانِ «أبواب السعادة»؛ إذ كان «نقولا حدَّاد» يَرَى أنَّ وَسائلَ السَّعادةِ ثلاثٌ: الثروة، والحُب، والصحة. وهُو هُنا يَتناولُ الوسيلةَ الأُولى (الثروة) ويُحدِّدُ مُقوِّماتِها بالسَّعيِ والعملِ والاقتصاد، وهي المَحاوِرُ الرئيسةُ التي نَاقَشَها على مَدارِ الكتاب. وقَدْ مَهَّدَ لها بتناوُلِ مفهومِ السَّعادةِ والعَلاقةِ بينَها وبينَ الثروةِ وطبيعةِ الإنسانِ وتَطلُّعاتِه. ومِن أَهمِّ ما يُميِّزُ الكتابَ تَقديمُه لمَبادئَ وقواعدَ مُحدَّدة، ومُرتَّبة، ومُتصِلةٍ بعضُها ببعض، يُمثِّلُ مَجموعُها وصفةً ناجعةً لتحقيقِ الثروةِ والحِفاظِ عليها.
