About the Author: Bennabi was the first researcher to try to define the dimensions of the problem, identify the basic elements of reform, and distance himself from the search for symptoms, and he was also the first to deposit a specific method in the study of the Muslim problem on the basis of psychology, sociology and the Sunnah of history.

رأيت أشياء كثيرة، منذ عشرين سنة. لقد شبعت لحد التخمة فأنا كالنحلة عندما تستبد بها الكظة من عسلها وتستفيض الجني وتدخر جنيها. للأسف فإن “العسل” الذي أضعه بين دفات هذه الصفحات مصدره ليس رحيق الزهور العبق ولكن خلاصة ما يختلج في نفس أريد لها التحطيم عبر الإكراه الحسي والسم المعنوي. فقصة هذه النفس وتجربتها منذ عشرين سنة هي نفسها قصة هذا الكتاب، إنها باختصار “اعترافات” أو “مذكرات:، وقد استهوتني عناوين كثيرة أسمّ بأحدها هذا الكتاب، غير أني اخترت عنوانا يلخصها جميعا: “العفن”. ويوافق هذا العنوان بالفعل الانطباع الأكيد الذي أحملله معي من متحف أو معرض يحويان وجوها وأشياء أعرفها منذ عشرين سنة، وأجدها مرتبة ومصنفة بطريقة استذكارية معززة بشروحها وبطاقاتها الخاصة؛ فنحن الآن أمام مجموعة من “لوحات الخونة…” مثلا، وبجانبها، لوحة خاصة بـ “أصدقاء مسلمين” من أمثال “ماسينيون”، أما في هذا الجانب فتوجد قاعة خاصة “بأشياء القابلية للاستعمار وقصص الأهالي” سكان المستعمرات، ونقف بعدها أمام “قاعة الاستعمار والإحسان المسيحي”، أما في هذا الركن المظلم المناسب، فنجد “قاعة الأسرار اليهودية”، وتليها “مخابر السموم السيكولوجية”.
