About the Author: Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) was an Austrian writer of Jewish descent. A distinguished Austrian writer and one of the most prominent writers in Europe at the beginning of the last century, he was famous for his extensive studies dealing with the lives of famous writers such as: Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Balzac and Roman Rolland. Stefan decided to get rid of life while witnessing the collapse of world peace and the scourge of World War II. I did it without fear and did not forget to thank the government of Brazil, where he committed suicide for the hospitality and care, knowing that the late had obtained British citizenship shortly before his suicide. A farewell letter, including a letter to his first wife, after which Stefan Zweig and his second wife entered the bedroom and in one moment swallowed dozens of sleeping pills and embraced tenderly and hugged. The next day, the servants of the house broke into the bedroom because they were late in waking up to find the writer and his wife had died. In an eternal embrace and without making a fuss, the writer did not forget to give his pampered dog a large dose of hypnotics, so he slept in turn in front of the bedroom door.

كان تسفايغ شاعراً وفيلسوفاً ومؤرخاً وروائياً، جمعته علاقات صداقة مع كبار معاصريه ومنهم فرويد ودالي، وهو هنا يؤرخ لعصره في مذكرات حية ذكية، صريحة، وكأنها أهم رواياته.. لم يحظَ الأديب النمساوي ستيفان تسفايج، المولود في فيينا عام 1881 م، بحياة مستقرة آمنة، فالحياة التي بدت في بدايات الطفولة والصبا رخية، هادئة سرعان ما كشفت عن أنيابها الحادة لصبي غر يتلمس أول الطريق في عالم الكتابة؛ والإبداع؛ والفن. إن السنوات الأخيرة من القرن التاسع عشر وبدايات القرن العشرين شهدت استقرارا في القارة الأوربية. لكن وتيرة الأزمات بدأت مع نشوب الحرب العالمية الأولى (1914 ـ 1918) لتؤذن بدخول هذه القارة الهانئة مرحلة من الصراعات القاتلة. صعود النازية في ألمانيا، والفاشية في إيطاليا. اشتعال الحرب الأهلية في أسبانيا. ومع نهاية الثلاثينيات ساد الخواء الثقافي، والانهيار الاقتصادي وتكلل ذلك بنشوب الحرب الكونية الثانية (1939 ـ 1945) التي لم يرَ تسفايج نهايتها لإقدامه على الانتحار في مدينة بتروبولس البرازيلية في 23 شباط 1942م. هذا الانتحار جاء تعبيرا عن الاحتجاج على ما أصاب القارة الأوربية من جنون أشعل حروبا طاحنة حصدت أرواح الملايين. لم يجد الكاتب بديلا سوى الرحيل بعد أن استنزفت طاقاته “أعوام التشرد المديدة”. لكنه تمنى لأصدقائه حياة أجمل، إذ كتب في رسالة مقتضبة، قبيل الانتحار: “عسى أن تتسنى لهم رؤية الفجر بعد هذا الليل الطويل! وها أنذا أتقدمهم وقد فرغ صبري تماما”. هذه الحياة الدراماتيكية التي توزعت بين المنافي، والتي انطوت على مفارقات مريرة، هي محور مذكرات تسفايج “عالم الأمس” التي صدرت ترجمتها العربية مؤخرا عن دار المدى بدمشق بتوقيع عارف حديفة.
