هذه هي الرواية قبل الأخيرة في مسيرة الساحر جابرييل جارسيا ماركيز، كتبها عام 1994. يزعم ماركيز في تقديمه للرواية بأنه ذهب بحثًا عن خبر صحفي حول أعمال نقل مقابر دير قديم، وإذا بضربة معول لأحد العمال تكشف عن جديلة شعر طولها 22 مترًا وعشرة سنتيمترات تنتهي بجمجمة لفتاة صغيرة. ويُفضي إليه رئيس العمال دون دهشة بما يعتبره حقيقة علمية: “الشعر ينمو بمعدل سنتيمتر واحد كل شهر حتى بعد الموت” ويُقدِّر ماركيز الزمن الذي نمت فيه الجديلة بمئتي عام، ويربط الواقعة بأسطورة حكتها له جدته عن مركيزة ماتت في الثانية عشرة بعضة كلب، وكان شعرها الأصهب يجرجر وراءها مثل فستان العروس، وكانت تحظى بتقدير كل شعوب الكاريبي لمعجزاتها الكبرى. بعد هذا التقديم يبدأ ماركيز في إعادة بناء حياة الطفلة التي بدأت في التصرف بشكل فاحش، ووصلت ممارساتها الغريبة مع العبيد والخدم إلى مسامع الكنيسة فتم انتزاعها من أهلها، وسجنها في الدير لانتزاع الشياطين من جسدها، لكن المطران الشاب الذي يتولاها يقع في غرامها فيقرر الأسقف إبعاده إلى تجمع للمصابين بالجذام على ألا يعود إلا بعد شفائه من الحب، كما يقرر إخضاع الفتاة لجلسات تعزيم من أجل تخليصها من شياطينها، وبعد خمس جلسات من التعزيم والحقن الشرجية، تدخل الحارسة لتعدها للجلسة السادسة فتجدها “ميتة حبًا بعينين مشرقتين وبشرة طفلة حديثة الولادة”!
