شبه الإجماع الذي يفرضه قراء فيكتور هيجو حول روعة بعض أعماله مثل البؤساء وعمال البحر، وربما نوتردام باريس، قد لا تجده في عمل الرجل الضاحك، أو الرجل الذي يضحك. ما الذي يجعل من إسهاب المؤلف النثري في البؤساء ذو قوة هائلة تسحب القارئ وتجذبه بقوة، وفي ذات الوقت الإسهاب النثري في الرجل الذي يضحك يجد فيه القارئ سلبية كبيرة في العمل الأدبي؟ المؤلف لم يتغير، فها هي لغته ذاتها، غنائية حارقة، يتفنن في هز روح القارئ، يسير معه من رحل العذاب الأولى في البحر، إلى رحلة السلام الأخيرة، في البحر. يغوص إلى الأعماق: باحثاً ومستكشفاً في أعماق روح الشعب، ثم يبشر بها، ويقدمها، تلك المسماة بالحقيقة، أمام من ينكر وجودها. بين روايات فيكتور هيغو التي لم تشتهر شهرةً واسعة، بقيت روايةُ -الرّجل الضّاحك- لزمنٍ طويل هي الرّواية الأكثر تعرّضاً للتجاهل؛ ففيها تبلغ -عيوبُ- هيغو ذروتها: مبالغةٌ وزيف في صورة الأرستقراطية الإنكليزية في عهد الملكة آن، وعدم واقعية في طباع الشخصيات وفي الحدث الرّوائي، وهذيان كلاميّ، ومعرفةٍ متبحرةً في المقاطع المسهبة التي يتلوها المشعوذ، الفيلسوف أورسوس…. إن غنيمةً كهذه مقدّمة إلى النقّد، وفداحةَ -العيوب-، وجلاءَها الذي قد يعُدَّ مستِفزاً، قد تجعل المرء يفترض أن أولئك الذين ينساقون إلى الفخّ، فخّ نقدٍ عنيفٍ مفرطٍ في سهولته بحيث لا يمكن أن يكون مقنعاً، لم يُحسنوا قراءةَ هذه الرّواية كما يتطلّب الأمرُ أن تُقرأ. إن إعادةَ الاعتبار لها جارية، في حقيقة الأمر. والأمر نفسه الذي يجعلها لا تُطاق بالنسبة للذّوق -التقليديّ-، يجعلها عذبةً بالنسبة لذوق مختلف. وهكذا فإن مارسيل ريمون قد راق له أن يكتشف فيها رواية باروكيّة ثم إن ج – ب بارّير قد أحسّ جيّداً -بالطاّبع الحلميّ الذي يغمر المؤلَّف بكامله، وقام بتحليله؛ وتردُ صفة سيرياليّ حتى على قلمه، وتُقارَن رؤى الرواية بالأحلام -المرعبة أو الشهّوانيّة- التي يحلم بها هيغو، ويدوّنها باهتمامٍ بالغ في الكرّاسات المعاصرة لصياغة الرجّل الضّاحك. هل كان بول كلوديل إذن على حقّ حين رأى في هذا -الألبوم، ألبومَ الصوّر الحجريّة الملحميّة والباعثة على الذعر […..] رائعة الشاعر الكبير الفنية-؟ إن أحكام كلوديل على هيغو، الملأى بكاملها بالتحيّز، والضلالات والحماقات لا تفتقر قطّ إلى الذكاء والصّدق. ويمكن بحذر أن نثق بهذا الشاّعر. ومع ذلك، فلن نوصي إطلاقاً بالرجل الضاحك، باعتبارها روايةً شعرية أو ذات طابع حلْميّ، وباعتبارها احتفالاً للذاكرة، فهذه الرّواية، إن لم تكن كما يقول كلوديل بشيء من الخداع، رائعة هيغو، فهي إحدى روائعه الأهم بالأحرى، إنّها في قلب العالم الهيغوليّ، مؤلَّفٌ هام.
