على أننا في هذه الدراسة نعني بإلقاء الضوء على الرحلات التي تمت فعلا في إطار المكان بوصفه البعد الرئيسي في إنتاج مادة ذات طبيعة جغرافية وإنسانية انعكست بصورة أو بأخرى على رؤية كاتبها، ومن ثم يحق لنا أن نتوقف بغير قليل من الدهشة أمام بعض الكتاب الذين يعتبرون مثلا كتاب ((رحلات جاليفر)) لسويفت، ضمن أدب الرحلات، وهو عبارة عن رواية ترمز أحداثها لبعض ما يجرى في إنجلترا في عصر المؤلف، ولهذا فهي تعد عملا أدبيا روائيا، وليس لها أية علاقة بأدب الرحلات، فليس الأدب الأخير معنيا بالرحلات الخيالية، ولكنه معني أساسا بالرحلة الواقعية ذات المحددات المكانية والزمانية، سواء جرت على الأرض أو في السماء أو تحت الأرض وفي أعماق البحار.
